[preview] Seven Shell

Hey guys,

For those with a good memory, you will remember Seven. Back in the days of the second attempt at the Finder Project, I created this desktop environment for use with it. Skip ahead about 8 months to now.

Today, I found on an old CD with the code for the seven desktop environment. I couldnt find any of my resources however, so I recoded it with the look of OS8.

Just wondering, if any of you think this is any good, I'll take a shot at making it more OSX like etc. Its got a pretty solid foundation, the window code works pretty well.

Tell me what you think And remember this is like some old code I just rewrote, dont expect it to be the next Longhorn .

It's looking cool, but I don't think you should invest the time and resources to make it look more like OSX - just focus on making Windows (the OS) Windows looking better

Im with ave on this one. This, if you used it would set us back a long ways in aqua skinning, because it doesnt look like we can use other programs with it, ie Y'z, ave desk, samurize, and all of thoes.

You can use apps over the top of it, it just hasnt been coded yet.

Wow, not bad! It really made me feel like I was in Mac OS 8 or 9 - something other Finder clones/shells fail to do.

I found a bug - When I drag a window around in it, it drags nice and smooth and all, but it leaves trails that refuse to redraw. I also had to download cncs232.dll which it said it couldn't find. I'm running Win2K Pro if you need to know -

wow nice stuff - I dont know how far this could be taken - but the ability to run aditional apps on top would be nice.

I found out what was making those trails, and have changed it.

I might continue with this, see how far it goes

Please do Alim - I love the stuff you create - and this one has alot of potential.

I personally think it has ALOT of potential, it could very well be a replacement for the windows shell, like litestep but especially made for us aqua freaks.

if this was combined with all the other little aqua emulation apps it could get apple up in a frenzy , :moon: which to me is a good thing

Well, it seems great, though I cant execute it.

"This application failed to start because CNCS232.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Anyone else get this?

This looks like it may actually be an entire shell replacement for windows. Apple would go bonkers over this when it is released. They may even try to ban it.

Again i say this app has potential, i just had a thought, if the app just ran on top of windows, and emulated the top macbar, then whatever dialogs that are associated with that macbar are emulated also, wouldnt that basically make the whole OSX right there? i mean the OS revolves around the macbar and the dock, and we pretty much got the dock covered, but i hardly seen ANYthing emulating the macbar, objectbar does a descent job with the right skin, but its not THAT good, the closest ive seen was an app whos name escapes me that emulated the macbar in OS8, 9, and OSX, (but not Panther) and i once tried to mod it but it just wasnt happenin, Alilm you could make a breakthrough with this, but i kno you have a lot of things ur workin on at one time, watevers at top priority is wat you should stick with, dont side track.

file system is more stable and unix based, runs on a different processor, different menus, different prefs, different ways to customize it, and no, we haven't got the dock covered.

i have not seen one app that does not show windows in the dock unless they are minimized.

some are working on expose (not me) and we're still working on finder. can't wait till felix 9.

i really say we should sue bill gates for giving us a shttp://www.moby.comhitty operating system, then we can get £2000 and go and buy a new powermac.

bill can afford it.

And i think Longhor.... ok lets end this, in my above post i probably should have clarified that wen i said its pretty much OSX right there, i meant the overall look of it, of course it wont act the same and be the same iside and out, but those two are the main objects of OSX, everything visual-wise revolves around it, wen u access anything on OSX, you have to go thru the macbar, the dock, (if u have that ugly control strip thing also i guess) or the desktop icons itself to get to anything on OSX, thats wat i meant by the whole look of it, and then of course comes the dialog looks, the window and OS behaviors, of course Finder, and all the other little things that make up OSX, in a sense i was looking at the big picture.

I just switched to a g5 and a 23 inch cinema display selling my pc on ebay. and let me tell you windows is not even close to 10.3 as far as usability and design. Everything in osx has a purpose. It's just the little things you can't remember but they add up. Everytime I do something I'm like oh that's different, oh that's much better than the way I used to do it. I tried explaining it to a friend who wondered why a guy like me who has been using pcs for 10 years found osx to be a far superior os to windows and I found it hard to do. You really have to use it for about a week and see. It's cumlative. Even the help section is very useful. xp's help is pretty much useless but the help section in osx is actually worth looking at. All programs are in the same area when you click help. You can see a listing of help for all programs you have installed. It's this little things that seem small by themselves but systemwide they really start to make your life easier.
