Editorial/rant: Wincustomize Sucks... Or How

Well this is probally more a rant than an editoral...

But it seems I have been made a target by those that are jealous or are pissed off at me...

This first came to my attention on the #aquaxp IRC channel.

It Seems that it was reported by ONE person out of 958 that my OB theme "Mac OSX 10.2.4" contained a virus. Actually a trojan called Schoolbus. Well I, and others, and the admins over at Wincustomize have scanned my theme, and found NOTHING, and this is a trojan that is covered with current definitions in all AV programs...

So, now regardless Wincustomize went ahead and removed my theme. And pulled a UNWRITTEN policy that themes cannot contain executables... there is nothing in their rules or guidelines for submitting themes about this...

Needless to say its a travesty and a sad affair...

With this, and the fact Wincustomize are going to have it that only those that get a 2 year subscription with them or those that have registered stardocks products can download files from Wincustomize... (and thats another rant.) I will no longer be uploading themes to them, and I recommend others not to either. There are other skin sites out there that can host them.

But to let you know, NONE of my themes have viruses or trojans.

Thanks, the file has been removed.

Norton didn't see any virus in the vlt_setup20.exe, but Norton has been known to be wrong from time to time. Besides, our policy is that no executables should be included with any skin or theme.

Well, great. I downloaded this last Thursday when a guy on the board was asking for help on it. I couldn't figure out the solution to his problem, and I deleted the skin. Today I ran a virus checker and didn't find anything. I deleted all unrecognized cookies, ran regclean and am hoping there's no virus on my computer. I am also behind a firewall at work, maybe that will help. I don't think I will ever use the "doubleclick" to install again. I usually look at every zip before extracting, but it never occured to me that I could get a virus here.

NetHaVoK....what AV proggy were you using?

Norton 2003 says it's clean.

InDefense says it's clean.

Trend Micro [online checker] says it's clean....

Personally I am offended...

I know there are some out there that want to make be look bad... that would love to kill any work I do.

I am not so lowly end user... I happen to work in IT, and I know my boxes are vril clean...

Hell the box that I used to make this theme was a fresh install. And the File in question I got directly from Emaculation.com and was d/l'd to this box. I also don't even check mail on this box.

Anyway... I and others have checked and there was no virus...

I also would like to know what AV program NetHaVoK used... If its that good i'll switch to it.

And how come when I am logged wincustomise and go to My Skins it says Alexandrie's Library, who is

Looks like some sort of unwritten rule to me. If I am wrong hey, point me to the right place. And if exe's are not allowed, how did it pass your submission processes, and allowed to be posted???

I would like to know which program he is using also. I didn't DL your skin.. Mainly because I don't like anything that deals with Mac.. I had bad things with them when I repaired them.

But that was mean what happened. It's been happening lately. People blaming the site and people of the site for something they probably did. By what I've seen and heared here, this is one of the most tight sites I've been on. The security, the checking before uploads, etc.

O', I have a idea for a next ObjectDock though since it's part of the title. Or I might do a Objectbar.. My first attempt at that.. Woohoo.. . A Virus Bar. Ever watch the Movie?

I installed and loaded it, it never once attempted to access any ports, period. If it had my firewall would have let me know and shut it down automatically then appended it to the log file and also slide the side bar out notifying me again that there was program/file named " fill in blank " that attempted to access the network. All of which has not happened.

anyway....

oh and NAV, McAfee, FProt and Inoculate respectively, do not find one thing wrong with it either....

Guys, thanks for the info. Especially IPlural (I was worrying about "Phone Home") I ran McAfee virus checker, and it didn't find anything either. Guess I got alarmed for nothing, but viruses are scary! I have been computing for many years and have never gotten a virus, but I am usually careful.

Koasati: The executable seems to be a program to emulate the Mac vol control. It may have been better to have provided it as a link rather than the actual executable. If executables should nto be included in executable files it needs to be written somewhere clearly (ie on the upload page).

I too use Norton and didnt find any virus in your file. But Norton has been known to be wrong. We'd better be safe than sorry.

But as I said, wether the file does or not contain a virus is not relevant at this point since, as a general rule, we don't accept executables in the files of our library. It is not written in the guidelines because when we, admins of Wincustomize, wrote the guidelines, we never thought about it, we never thought people would start uploading EXE's in their zips. But recently, some people have indeed started doing so, which forced us to take a decision. That is the reason we don't have a screensaver section, that is the reason we reject logons that include a logonui.exe in it, etc.

Is your executable so essential to your theme? Is it not possible to just remove the execuble from it?

Usually, people understand when we tell them that we can't take the chance of allowing executables. Because it is such a popular site, because litteraly millions of people download files from it, it has indeed become a target for viruses. You must understand that.

As to why Alexandrie's skins are showing up in your My Skins page instead of yours, that's a mystery. I'll alert T-Man or Alexandrie (yes, she is an admin/programmer for this site) on the question.

well "vlt_setup20.exe" is a volume controller that runs in the system tray that emulates the OS X volume control, it is not a requirement, but was included as a bonus.

There is actually another exe included also, "reschanger.exe" which is a requirement, cause the allows the the display icon on my OB to change display resolutions.

And in my next version there will be a 3rd exe included, so that the winamp icon I am adding can give commands to winamp via its menu (its a cmd line application).

Personally, sure I would like to actually use Desktop X plugins to do this, since OB supports them. But no one has written any plugins to do this... and the Desktop X plugin scripting language is just insane, and I am not a programmer. So I am pretty much in a catch 22.

A) NetHaVoC has no idea what he is talking about.

NetHaVoC is an innocent bystandard of a really crappy anti-virus program.

C) This is a personal attack, ment to undermine my work.

sorry for the rough time you've had with your theme getting removed from WC, but I do definitly see the side of a policy not allowing executables in themes... skins are just images and text files, anything else does move into dangerous territory and if exe's were allowed i could definitly see how it could cause headaches and could cause problems.

also, as for the note about requiring a subscription to download themes, this isn't true, though to my knowledge all you have to do is register and you get a certain number of MB or something (~50mb? don't really know you'd have to check) per week you can download, and people who have ObjectDesktop (a 1year subscription) or have bought any of their other products (ObjectBar, WindowBlinds, etc) get a lot extra or unlimited (again not sure the policy exactly) as they are helping to pay for the bandwidth they are using, which becomes very expensive.

idk, i see your point on one side but perhaps their side of it should be considered as well. that is all, cya

I think its more I am ticked and being personally attacted (not by Wincustomize), by whoever posted that there was a virus.

Mage at no way was I putting you down! I had no idea who made the skin used it and it was fine but when did trojan check and virus check the school bus trojan was there. I did download from aquaXP site not the wincustomize site. After all was clean I did a test and downloaded it again from aquaXP site and it came up again about the schoolbus trojan being in the extras folder the vlt file. Also at no time did I say you did this I just let people know what I found. The first to find it was pc doorguard and they have not got back to me so I can see if is a bug.

The second was the trend micro site. no where else on the system the file can be found just in the extras folder of the theme. For all I know I could have got something of the aquaXP site I have no idea what is going on but its just that theme. A couple a friends grabed the pc doorguard program and d/l from aquaxp your theme and it came up for them also. This is why I want pc doorguard to check for bugs just in case!

Well I downloaded pc doorgaurd and ran the ran the trend micro scan....

pc doorgaurd indeed gave me the same results as you...

but not everytime... and the trend micro site turned up nothing...

I even d/l'ed the volumetray app again... directly from the source

its looking more like a bug in pc door gaurd to me..

I did the trend micro again with the same file today and nothing! Pc doorguard still have not got back to me about if this is a bug or not Still using the theme it rocks just got rid of the vlt file. Once again this was in no way an attack to you just letting people know what I found.

I don't think Wincustomize sucks. Maybe as a paying OD customer I am biased, but that's my 2 pence.

I read a lot of "<>> sucks" on the various forums and don't understand it. It seems that for many when an individual releases something (whether free or attracting a small fee) they're respected for it, but because Stardock are a company they're mistrusted, even sometimes compared to Micro$oft (whaaat?). I just see them as a group of people from all over the world that develop products.

I get so tempted to write back when I hear "fanboys" of other apps criticise other stuff for no good reason but I don't. It's not cricket.

But dont worry, there are plentty of other forums you ran into (while roaming around earth leashed to your master GOKU), where your stench was perpetuated.(As you can see here,this is just verry sad and its hard not to laugh at this).GoKu and soldier and all the others inside you GoKu,Please go to the nearest hospital and ask for the Brain doctor(you can call her froddi or Gollom whatever,just remember to ask for his/her help

when you are inside the hospital(you can also call the hospital something like hmm? world4 perhaps,there is help,you will find some help inside there).

lol i didnt read what cuzzo say, but i quoted him cause the other cuzzo keeps surpasing precious and constantly deleting their precious posts.
