Hey,
I just recently downloaded Gimp 2.0 for windows xp. Does anybody know where i can find a hack to add a back to the gimp interface? or a way to make Gimp a multiple document interface?
This may be not be in existence, but i thought i'd give it a shot. 
I'm pretty sure this can't be done - it follows a different paradigm.
It annoys me too, but I doubt a single hack could completely change the app.
I took a closer look - while they reist doing something like this - they are trying to make it less annoying for people who are used to windows - for what that's worth.
There was a hack for 1.x that added basic MDI functionality (kde-look.org), but the GIMP is PURPOSELY SDI because it is a better interface. I don't really want to get into an argument, but MDI is still used because the Windows (the OS) Window Manager is crappy. It lacks most basic functionality (by default), such as window shading, tabs, virtual desktops, etc.
Basically, the Window Manager should be responsible for controlling windows, not the actual program (this makes everything more consistent). UNIX window managers (inc. OSX) have done a great job on this, so it's usually only Photoshop users complaining. In fact, you can see MDI is fading away in most apps.
There are some tools you can add to help though. There are some freeware window shaders and virtual desktop programs (though none as good as the UNIX ones). I haven't seen a freeware app that adds Window Tabbing though. GIMP 2.0 can have tabs, so use that feature. Also, you can attach multiple windows together to create something like 2 windows that actually contain 4 or 5. (it does this by default on the UNIX version).
I know it's different then photoshop though, but gimp is NOT a clone, so it takes some getting used to. I understand it can be annoying.
The person who created the 1.x hack may update it for 2.0 though, so there's still hope.
