Geforce Fx 5600 256mb Or Fx 5900xt 128mb?

Any hardware experts?

I want to upgrade my video card to either

Leadtek GeForce FX5600,256MB, VIVO/DVI or

NVIDIA GeForce FX5900,128MB,VIVO/DVI or

NVIDIA GeForce FX5900XT,128MB,TV-Out/DVI

I needed the VIVO to record a video from my handycam. What I want to ask u guys, are:

1) Is it a big difference to go from FX5600 to FX5900 or FX5900XT?

2) I have a special videocapture card, captured a video from my handycam, but the quality is so low. Will it make a big difference if I use this FX5900 VIVO?

3) Since I need the VIVO, I might not be able to get the FX5900XT.. is it a big difference with and without XT?

The main problem with quality is the video camera itself. Getting a new card may help a little but to be able to have high quality NTSC (or whatever you record to) video, you need a high quality camera with high quality film (or just a good camera if no film is involved). Maybe you could put up a screenshot of the video?

I would recommend the 2nd video card, based on reviews and personal experience as well as benchmark tests.

A good program would help too. I really like Final Cut Pro 4 (out of your price range, trust me) but iMovie is OK. As for PC...I dont know any! Do some research, dont just use the program that came in the box, that is usually the crappiest.

Hm.. well if I connect the vidcam to the TV, the image is so clear/just like looking at a DVD ( i know the vidcam is a good one, it's my housemate's ). After converting it, it looks like someone is recording a movie in the cinema

So a good video card does make a difference in quality?

About the screenshot, maybe next time (I have removed the file from my computer )

get the 5900xt (its the fastest of the cards with the 5900 comming in a close second and the 5600 a long ways away. You realy shoulnt nottice so much of a prefromance diffrence between the XT and regular ultra card, mabie 3 or 4 FPS in battlefeild or something.

Unless your vidoe capture care is complette trash (like if it has vacuum tubes or something) it wont make any diffrenct, the loss of quailty is most likely your handicam, or it could just be the default reselution your importing in.

sorry, but i have a vaio and i got the fx 5600, and the problem with vaio's is that u cant disable there onboard vid cards. so the 2 will fight eachother, and it cause's a .5 second stall every 3 seconds. i plan on ditching the vaio and building a pc.

u might wanna research this before u get an expesive vid card.

5900 regular, I'm not even sure if the 5900xt is better than the regular, in fact im fairly certain its not (i read an article duscusing the new XT, SE etc models) and the Xt for ATI is beter, while worse for nvidia, and vice versa for teh SE, but i'm not sure how reliabel the source was

i dont keep many tabs on nvidia because they have turned into crap for the most part- i have the 256 5600, total crap, sure its beter than my GF4 mmx 64mb, but not that much better- if you plan to use the cards stock then wahtever, but good luck OCing, the cards have been pushed to their limmit as it is, and wont go much further, ATI's offereings on the other hand would OC like motehres and wil beat the hell out of anything comparable from nvidia

i dont mean to be a total nvidia basher, as far as raw speed the new nvidia 5950 is top dog, by a hair, but the 9800XT (and pro for that matter) can top nvidia in the architectre department

but for the range of cards you are l0okign at, and the VIVO isnt an isue (form what it sounds like you dont, but i hve no idea, dot follow video capture) i would ditch nvidia especially for the 5600 range (the 9600 pro kills in comparison) and in the 5900 range, the 9800pro 128s will beat that thing, not to mention the 256 models, and a 9800XT is the best choice on the market right now, for tommorows games especialy (it handles AAIF and AA much better than the 5950, and certainly the 5900s) for what you are looking at the 9800pro 128 would be a great choice, its down to around $207 at newegg.com and is still prolly one of the best cards around, much better than anything you are looking at

(and for the record the 9800pro and maybe even a 9700pro OCed would kill any of the other cards stock easily)

They need to turn off this and that, reinstall previous drivers, etc etc

That's really strange. I have an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro and have never had a single game compatibility problem. Your friends were probably using some crap drivers. Plus ATi has really improved their driver support area which has always been their greatest downfall. But the Catalyst drivers are being updated so frequently, I'm kinda getting sick of downloading newer versions each time I visit their site (This is a good thing ). I would no doubt buy an ATi card the next time I need a video card. I can say that ATi's Radeon graphics card has definitely won me over as a loyal customer (over from nVidia whom I used to swear by a couple of years ago... <_< )

i agree, when i bought my 5600 256, i was so exited, i had been such a loyal nvidian, i was super psyched... of course it wore off almost immediatly, it would have been sooner if i had not been upgrading from a TNT2- i mean, the card does all i need it too, but just barely, and theres alot more i wish it would do, i am just about to need a new card- and this time it certainly wont be nvidia the 5600 is worse than the 4200, and the 5800 only marginally better than the 4800, it was ridiculous the crap nvidia has been releasing, just OCing, and giving slight upgrade here and there, scrambling to get ontop of ****- they need a reality check, to beat ATI right now, they need all new hardware archtiecture, cause waht they have now sucks

@sid, i think he meant driver compatibility because his n00b friends were upgrading from nvidia cards and didnt get rid of the old drivers, i'm also sure that some apps that optimiaze based on the card in teh machine on installation would have gotten upset
