The swastika was branded by what you associated it with because of the most recent history of WW2. But the origin of the sign and the meaning dates back to way beyond... and it has way far-reaching meaning than whatever things shallow the modern generation can link it with.

I know a Swastika used to be a very religious symbol. When Hitler adopted it as his crest it was changed forever to a sign of hate. There is no if, ands, or buts about it... A swastika today is a sign of Hate. I have an open mind just not to bigotry.
I asked him to change it, he declined, i'm not going to lose any sleep over it. I'm just going to think low of his morals.
Please stop this needles discussion. You don't have to take his username for what is this symbol taken today. Silencedge is right. Keep your mind open and stick to the topic.

In other words, it all depends on the direction of his swastika, and where you come from.

What's the big deal? He called himself "swastika", not "Jesus H. Christ" or "Adolf M.F. Hitler", so I think it's a ideologically transparent nickname, and swastika, as was already mentioned, comes from sanskrit and does not mean anything offensive..

I'm sorry for your grandfather, but like I said, the only difference is the way in which the symbol is represented (and even that is inconsistent - in ancient Rome, the swastika was protrayed identically to that of nazis, and was used to signify prosperity). Both are called swastika.
In other words, how can you tell, from his name, that he is referring to the symbol of the nazis? He may, for example, be buddhist or hindu, in which case, calling himself "swastika" would roughly mean "I am being good".

Ignorance is in the eye of the beholder, Goku. Does the fact that I recognise that the swastika means different things to different cultures make me more or less ignorant than you, even though I also recognise the significance it has to the Jewish people?

I have to agree with Stevie on this. Swastika has a history far beyond the Nazi's. Castro, I am sorry that your grandfather and your family had to go through that in the past, but there is more to the meaning of Swastika than the Nazi's. We are not a hateful group, nor do we show disrespect to other members (well, at least we didn't use to, until lately). But given in the same context, my name "wizard" could be offensive because it promotes magic and wizardry which some people don't believe in. And yes to extreme also. A local school district became under fire over here because the elemetary kids where reading a Harry Potter book, and a parent got really offensive and left the school. I am not saying you should leave, that's the last thing we need here, another loyal and respectful member to leave. My name has a different meaning, such as Swastika or like any of yours.
