Just Got A Mac Have A Question

I just got a mac it's running osx 10.1.5. Can I update it to 10.2.x?

Or do you have to pay to do that? cause safari won't run on 10.1.5 btw it rocks Only 400 mhz but still snappy and pretty as hell
