Lacie Vs. Iomega

OK, as some of you may know, I recently had an external HD die on me. So, I picked up 2 new ones to test drive. I have the following models:

LaCie 160GB FireWire 300702U

Iomega 120GB USB 2.0/FireWire 32659

I've read a mix of reviews on both models, but the negative ones on the Iomega were VERY negative.

I'm not sure which one to keep. There are pros and cons to both: the LaCie unit has a larger capacity, but it's not designed to be portable per se; the Iomega unit feels solid and appears to be designed for portability (which is important to me), but its capacity is 75% that of the LaCie and Iomega hasn't exactly had the best reputation (speaking especially of the ZIP and Jazz drives).

Any opinions?

Well, for me, I bought myself a nice hard drive enclosure that can do both USB 2.0 and Firewire. It can be daisychained to other enclosures, can be connected via USB and Firewire at the same time (it will default to one of the two, but it won't get screwed up). I can put any hard drive I want in there, of any size. And if the hard drive dies, I only have to replace the hard drive (which can be picked up pretty damn cheaply -- especially since CompUSA is having its 20th anniversary sale this week).

No problems so far since I started using it in October. Pretty damn silent especially since I have a 120GB Seagate in there. (Seagate drives rock -- silencing foam!)

The 120GB drive itself was $90 when I bought it last May. You can definitely find larger drives for less today.

This might not be helpful to you at all if you're set on keeping one of those two external HD you mentioned, but I thought I should just share my experiences.

That's very helpful. I had considered just buying a drive and sticking it in the enclosure of the one that died. But, I'm not going 100% for practicality here - like anyone that's interested in modding, I have aesthetic concerns as well. I may end up not keeping either drive and just going to enclosure + bare drive route.

Mine is just bare plastic (white translucent in Macish style as in the pictures), but my boyfriend got a nice looking one with side panels. link

Oh btw, your DTOXX clock docklet stopped working for me after the year changed from 2003 to 2004. Was there a fix?
