Cmd Help Needed

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but here we go:

I thought, if we treat this as a little trivia question, everyone can have a go, and we can see which solution works.

My problem is that i modded my shell32 file, :smartass: changing the folder icons, and it didn't like it. I can still boot, and most application work as per norm. :D but when i try to run explorer in any way, it gives me an error report. I do have a backup copy, called shell32a.dll, but i don't know how i can replace the defect one with the backup copy. Any ideas? (and no, foprmatting is NOT an option, just thought i'd make that clear)

how did you replace it? did you use replacer? if so, you can restore the backup by dragging in the shell32.dll file, then typing restore.

if you didn't, it might still work. make sure the backup is in the same folder, but named "shell32.backup" and then drag in shell32.dll (i.e. the modded one) into the replacer window. it might let you restore the backup file.

another way is to simply rename the file from shell32.dll to shell32.old and then rename the backup from shell32.backup (or whatever you called it) to shell32.dll and reboot. if this doesn't work, you can do it in the recovery console.

Thanks for the help - this is all very well, but no i did not use replacer, i did it manually in the dllcache folder, and the backup is shell32a.dll hmmm... :(

I was wondering if i could do it though CMD in any way?

if you want to do it through the command window, boot off your xp installation cd and use the recovery console.
