Search Button & Pinned Topics

One of the other forums I visit uses this search button , which is very hard to miss, even for nubes. To decreased "STFF" posts, I suggest making the A-S search button similarly Vega$ (prominent) so that people can't help but see it.

At the same time, to further reduce neverending redundant requests perhaps a moderator with a bit of free time could compile and pin some key nube issues into their respective forums, e.g.

1) OSX wallpapers/desktops

2) large icons on the dtop (we've got a novel-length manual on this topic here)

3) converting Mac icons to ICO

4) converting PNG to ICO and vice versa

5) changing system tray icons

That's all I wanted to say. I think with relatively minor effort we could cut down on quasi-hostile "STFF" posts as well as the vast number of redundant threads seen on these boards.

Of course I put my support behind that, it's an inspired idea.

However I still think a little constructive pinning and thread-consolidation could also reduce redundant thread topics in the short to mid term.

If other put their opinions down here we might get the boards a little better organized, no?

Yeah, but the problem is, they don't even read the pinned threads. Do you know how many threads there are on iTunes problems? Even though there is a thread pinned that Duckie made about iTunes problems. I think what alotta people do, including me, is they go to the "View New / Active Posts" look there and then they post. The problem will be solved once the searching issue is resolved.

Agreed. Search can fix many things, I am with you. But active moderators closing redundant threads/topics and redirecting posters to consolidated threads/topics like Duckie's iTunes topics, for example, is also valid.

Imagine if we had one consolidated topic on large desktop icons. Any time a member started a new thread such as: 'How do I get 128x128 icons on my dtop?' a mod could simply provide the pinned link and close the thread. Voila, so simple, end of story, end of clutter. In theory, the same thing should happen whenever someone starts an iTunes problem thread, or any already-pinned topic thread.

Aside from that, people need to stop waiting for a n00b to post such a thread to jump at them ( a lot of people are just waiting for one of them). Another problem is tat people have no clue how to search for something, not even on google, and thus, results are 0.

Yes, mods could respond quickly and close the thread, but instead of mods having to run like demented monkeys (yes, like that), members like us who have been here a while could also provide with the link to the stickie and off we go.

How many mods (or people with thread power) are there? 6, they cannot be expected to be on A-S all day, not even for a divided 6 hours. Jef doesn't do much thread maintenance (he's her on a "I wonder what these losers are doing?" type of occasion), thus leaving Timmie with the most power and he has a job. And so do the rest of the staff with power. The addition of Pe7 helps, but still, they are not always here. I think (as what Seph said), it is a job of veterans here, like us, to calm people down when there is a redundant thread, post a link to a more helpful thread and let it be.

Yes, man, absolutely, and most often that is what happens. Nevertheless, I for one would like to see the mods, and Realitybath and Lostspyder and many others here running around like demented monkeys, pretty much all the time.

I like your suggestions and I agree with them. Maybe we'll force Timmie to put glowing search button with some loud sound effect in popup appearing on every page for members with -50 posts

About pinned topics.....I don't think it's the best idea. You know, we have Articles section, all empty and waiting for us experienced members to fill it with all useful stuff. It will be activated in a short time

If I do add say a search box at the top, I will not do it for every skin, becasue that gets to be a pain in the arse. Now the glowing search button idea which is from a bad forum , we dont have button to flash so :/ that kinda stops that.

i suggested a vegas style search buttons before but now when i think about it, people that don`t use search wouldn`t use it even if it occupied half of the page. some people are just too lazy :6
