Changing The Folder Icons In Xplorer

If you do not wish to install an entire new shell32.dll, but only want to change the folder view, you can press ctrl-alt-del and shut down EXPLORER.EXE. This will shut down some security services that would otherwise prevent the ability to modify systemfiles. Start up reshacker and open up C:\Windows\Service Pack Files\i386\shell32.dll and later on C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll

Navigate to icon group, folders 4 and 5 which contain the folder files. replace resource and pick your favorite folder icon. Replace... voilá!

you cannot edit shell32.dll while Windows is running

it can only be replaced in safe mode

Then my windows must be hacked seriously, 'cause I managed perfectly. Just do it with explorer.exe not running.

So can other people but not everyone. I have a better method. Download / make your own shell32.dll and then use "replacer." It will change the files and when u reboot you'll see your new shell32.dll file.

sure you can, but it doesnt take effect until you reboot anyway because Windows will, by default, use the active Shell32.dll

when you use ResHacker, it renames the OLD Shell32.dll to Shell32_original.dll and Windows knows that.

Its not that windows knows , the icons remain until you reboot because the old icons are still in the icon cache.

There are some icons (like folders) that refresh into the icon cache every bootup. There are others that refresh once a week / never / some other lengthy period. Thats why when you change your shell32.dll you sometimes need to rebuild your icon cache cuz some of the old icons stay there.

I'm sorry guys. You all rock and contribute wonderfull stuff and knowledge to these forums. Thanks a lot!! But I just read many questions on the Xplorer thread about changing the icons.... So what I did, i posted in the first post of this topic.

No safe-mode, no waiting for an icon cache to reload. just open up reshacker, shutting down explorer.exe, modding the shell32.dll in i386 and system32 folders...

restart explorer.exe...

And I had my beloved Aqua-folders in Xplorer...

So that's why I posted this, so everyone can enjoy their own favorite foldericons...

Any other method is ofcourse okay, because it's not the way it's done that matters: it's the fact that it gets done!

iconpackager didn't work for me, i changed the folders in iconpackager, but it didn't make a difference, still seeing the fuggly yellow folders in xplore.

i have the enanced version. am i missing something?

im not big on doing anything with shell32.dll, i did that once a year ago and my comp crashed, and i had to use my recovery cd's.

Yes, I think I understand now. Xplorer uses the icons from shell32.dll. Not the ones stored in your icon cache. IconPackager changes the icons in your cache... The only way to get nice icons in Xplorer is to modify your shell32.dll. There are some great replacements out there, for example stefanka's systemfiles. Restart in Safe mode, hit ctrl-alt-del and shutdown explorer.exe. Now you can safely replace your system files. hit file, new task and then browse. select 'all files' instead of browsing only programs. Now you navigate to the location that you saved your new shell32.dll. right click, copy.

Using XP service pack 1, navigate to windows\servicepack files\i386 and replace the shell32.dll file. (you can rename the old file, so when anything goes wrong, just rename it again and delete the new file. Call it shell32.bak for example)

Do the same thing for the shell32.dll file stored in windows\system32

reboot

you're done.

If something of this procedure can be done better, someone else will have to help me out

I need help. I went into safe mode modified mt shell32.dll rebooted and I had my new icons . Shutdown came back the next day and the original windows xp shell was back .
