Aqua-Soft ForumsMoby's new dock is going to feature dx9 compatibilty. This means it will be running completely off the gpu instead of the cpu, thereby taking a huge burden and load off the main processor. Since Moby is implementing this wouldn't it be cool if he would implement the genie effect? If no cpu will be used up then why not? If Moby is going to do this, he's gonna need a lot of yes's before he takes this on. Just a few yes votes isn't gonna do it. We need like the whole community to vote, and then I'm sure he will do it.

What jerk would say no? Some people might not care that much, but who would want it purposly not included. I mean, Moby would have 99% of the community using his dock with the Genie installed, IMO.
The genie effect would be cool, but there are lots of other stuff I would like to see in mobydock, before the genie effect.

Cause for the 100th time genie effect is NOT a dock fuction.
The Genie effect is a fuction of the OS's handling of active windows.
The alphas of objectdock had it though and the way it works on the real OSX it integrates into the dock with how the window pours into the icon space.
If we did it seperate from the dock it wouldn't be able to pour into the dock unless the seperate effect maker and the dock could interoperate as if they where integrated with each other.
What I'd like to see is dynamically updating minimized windows.
Like the quicktime player in the demo of the dock at apple.com

Yes. Smoke is right. The dock needs to have the function, and it needs to be integrated with the dock for the "pour" to look right. If it was not integrated with the dock, then windows wouldn't know wherer to "pour" the window or application.
This would be a good feature but I think moby alreadys aid that he won't do it. Or maybe that was ObjectDock. I'm losing my mind its 10:46 am, that means I am awake too early.

When did you become the definitive measurement as to which dock is "ahead" or not. In my opinion Moby's dock is way ahead of object dock, and not far behind Y'z dock (and better than y'z dock in some ways). Let the man do his work unless you want to contribute by some means other than non constructive criticism. Enjoy his dock in whatever state it is.. its FREE

hm, i have to respectfully disagree. Moby's Dock, while it has a very realistic magnification effect, i don't think it is the most advanced of the docks. Object dock is skinnable, and has minimised window snapshots. objectdock also has the ability to use .ICO files, while the other two docks lack that ability.
Oh, and it's free, too.
and no, i don't work for Stardock.

right now not many people use mobydock i agree (the current version) however you are wrong when you say he is 80% behind everybody else with the new dx, mainly cause he is going to rule with that key.
every feature of the osx dock will be implemented identically.
I think he might be able to even make things like skinned pop ups and such (such=genie), due to the fact its completely using your graphics card. Just like a game.

I just hope Hes not affected by Contrasutra Syndrome: By the time he implements everything, OS11 is out and has some brand new gimmick that we all want to copy. This always happens to me. I buy a computer right before they upgrade everything and intels chips go down 50%.

I hate when that happens! I always wait and wait and wait and then finally I say ok their not going to go down anymore and I buy. And then what do ya know, the prices drop like 25%. That is significant!
I dont get what fellow is saying either. The thing that will bring moby dock in the lead is the directx9 compatibility. Even if he doesn't implement the genie effect, his dock will still be in the lead because of that one fact.
Genie effect would be very nice though!! Please people, keep voting!!! We need wwwwaaaaaayyyyyyy more yes's to really get him thinkin!! If you want it, VOTE!!!
I say implement all the features you can. Let it dice, chop, toast, brown, vacuum package and what else you can think of, but first incorporate a feature to turn each feature off. What is important to me is not to my neighbor... and versa vice or vice versa (there is no grammar in Latin). Then we have to think about how each feature behaves in terms of speed and machine load. Does the feature step on other applications toes and says ...I don't like that! ...So candy features have to be incorporated slowly or phased-in as Moby learns about how the whole dock code behaves.
Planning new features is good, placing them in stepwise is even wiser.
People, please don't vote no, if you dont have a good graphics card. We know it won't work well for you, but dont ruin it for us with decent video cards. I think its time you guys upgraded anyways. Get into the 21st century here. Get into the age of 3D gaming. That is where this industry is at now and that is where its going. And if that is not your reason for voting no then I don't know why the hell you are voting no. Please tell us.

I'd love to have it, but don't want to be dragged into "the age of 3D gaming". Just hope my card will be able to handle genie.
VideoMann was right on that... add any feature, but with an option to turn it off. Add the whole Mac OS X, if possible!

Yes Ken, thats a good idea to have options like that. Then for people without the power could still enjoy the great magnification effects of the mobydock without being bogged down from the genie effect.

Um, thanks for the slap in the face Jmitch. I'd gladly upgrade my videocard (also my processor and memory) if I had the money. However, being a college student, I spend most my days in classes and only have time to work about 16 hours a week. This is pretty much just enough to pay all my bills and leave me with enough to buy some food and stuff. It's rather rude to tell those with 'inferior' graphics cards to 'get into the 21st century' when the 21st century economy is preventing some of us from doing so.

P.S.- I am voting 'Yes' on the genie effect; even though I don't have a good enough graphics card to run MobyDock, I still respect the work he is doing.
