[poll] About Depression Being Real

Due to a recent post full of moronic assumptions about depression, here is a poll for you. also, that thread wasnt about depression, so here's one for you ontopic nazis.

I'd like an honest answer, not smartass replies.

I'd honestly like a good concensus of your opinions

and dont chicken out...give your reason for your answer.

Yes it is. For some people. There are those who genuinely can't cope with life, either because life's too harsh for them at the moment, or they just aren't good at dealing with it.

For those who just give in and take various meds at the sight of a below-par day. They aren't depressed. They're just having a bad day and can't be arsed to take it.

my thought is that there are fewer of those people than we believe.

it is alot like subtle racism. An example might be like here in the US, people think Cubans and Haitians are bad people, but they arent. They are all good people, but a few bad ones made the rest look so.

I'm not saying you believe this or associating you with this, Ludge, but as per the views posted in that other entry, it appears others do share this belief.

People need to stop focusing on the few bad apples and focus on the real issues.

thanks for your post, Ludge...always a pleasure.

#127503

I know of a few people close to me who suffer from depression...

#127504

I know it's real from experience, I know it's difficult to overcome and meds can come in handy. Eventually it can be left behind but it's a nasty beast that can catch up to you when you least expect it; it's more of a war than a battle... what I mean to say is personality-wise some of us are more prone to it than others.

#127521

i guarantee u its a clinical illness. if u'd been where i have u'd understand :( .

#127529

If you read my posts in the other thread, you'd realise that I'm not disputing that depression is a real illness. What I'm disputing is all the hundreds of thousands of cases diagnosed as "depression" when, no more than a few years ago, it was just viewed as "typical teenage behaviour". Yes, there are people who've suffered clinical depression, but there are also people who abuse the system for attention.

#127551

If people have not understood yet, Stevie, i dont think htey will...

Welcome to Aqua-Depression.org :P

Oh, and i dint vote, way too stupid

#127567

Ya stevie..

I like how we stated we don't think 100% of the people who claim depressesion have it, which is indeed valid, and now we're "ignorant assholes" who flat "don't believe" in depression.

I like the all mighty duckie's twist on words. :console:

Edit: I'm not voting either seph, as there's no option that fits my oppinion.

Edit 2: After even more replies, let me again applaud duckie at so wonderfully twisting what Stevie and myself had to say completely out of context. Here's to you wingman. :own:

#127569

Its real egnouf to draw people to kill themselfs, and if that isnt proof i dont know what is.

#127582

I have a friend who had a really bad period, with lots of depressions. He almost killed himself. If you say depression is not an illness, you got to be an idiot. Simple as that.

#127593

Personally I think depression isn't an illness - it's a state of mind. You don't call, say, sadness or anger an illness, so why is depression??

#127603

The Depression were talking about here, is not the looking at the mirror and thinking im ugly no body likes me one, this disorder is triggered most of the times for bad levels of chemicals/hormones in the brain, sometimes accrued because of a problem in the inmunologic system.

#127604

Yes, I have recently (end of last summer) been diagnosed with bipolar. But for some reason, when they put me on medication, it made me more depressed because the fact that I am dependent on a drug, probably for the rest of my life really disturbed me. And the worst part is I can cover it pretty well so that not even my family knows about it (which went on for a good 2 years). I think that the temporary depression is only a feeling, but long durations of depression is definitly an illness.

#127605

Wizard, i am sorry to hear that, i know about this, my brother is bipolar as well and goes trough this kind of swings all of the time, it usually has to do with the medication not being calming enough or the other way around...

Hang in there...

Browse the last 2-3 pages of the "Serious Boyfriend/girlfrend" thread.. you can catch up on the background of why The all mighty all wise all powerful Duckie felt like starting a pointless thread.

[edit]why would i be depressed. im 16 years old, and yes i have had relatives die, grandma [ never met her] grandpa. my other grandpa had cancer.....family friend died of lung cancer. but honestly i can admit i never had been depressed, ive had bad days....blah blah blah.

Wizard: and everyone who has been in that situation.

I would never consider suicide why? because i charish the life that God gave me. we are here for a purpose and we have to take the things that come at us and get through them. I would never consider suicide because i would recieve eternal damnation in hell, thats why. That is how i can judge people who have committed suicide. AND YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT, I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH PAIN they are going through, but hey there is always someone who can help. Dont say their isn't. My friend jake has panic attacks. Oh and being bipolar, you couldn't controll that, but you dont have to fret on it forever. Like i said before it is terrible for the people who suffer from this, but if there is a will there is a way.

dont flame me for my opinions, i respect what you guys have to say. I dont flame you for having your opinions.

and the fact of the matter is, I just dont know. I Was the only one who voted " I dont know". I really dont think any of us know, like you guys have said, some people really are in a bad situation and some do it for attention. I guess we will never know, hope you guys see eye to eye with me on that.

I don’t believe it is an illness. Yes depression does occur in many people, but I don’t believe it is an illness.  Like VIPER stated, it is a state of mind, IT can be changed unlike suicide.  People don’t wake up and just feel depressed out of the blue, something has to trigger the depression.  Your brain controls all the functions in your body, its not like diabetes where the cells are damaged [DNA] to where it doesn’t produce insulin.  Your brain controls the quantity of hormonal levels, something’s can affect the production, I don’t know for sure [not a scientist] but the human brain is a powerful thing. Yes, suicide is terrible, but [people might flame me, but its true] people who commit suicide are weak people in the first place. Now you might be saying, “he’s never known someone who has committed suicide” tisk tisk, but I have, A family friend, and a schoolmate. I say they are weak because they want to take the easiest way out, don’t get me wrong their situation isn’t the prettiest, but why take the life that was given to you.  They could have talked to someone about it, people were more than willing to help them through their struggles.  It wouldn’t be the easiest thing to overcome but it can be accomplished.

Ludge: People who cant cope with life at all shouldn’t believe they are the ones to blame.  It was all in how they were raised.  Yes life does throw curve balls at you, and sometimes we don’t know how to react.  But instead of killing myself, I use logic to sort out the problems or talk to people who might have gone through what I have gone through.  That is why we are different from animals, WE CAN REASON.

Bunkka, you have no idea what you are talking about, so then dont comment... it is a body problem when depression it is considered a medically tagged disorder.

Most of the people with depression problems (i can tell you, my mum has them, my brother, (bipolar) has them) are faced to a disfunction in the chemical assimilation process in their bodies (specifically brain cells) which leads them to lack (or overlimit) the normal levels of some substances e.g. melatonin.

I would say be thankful for not having this kind of problems, as i am after being exposed so closely to them.

To people suffering of these ailments, ill tell you what i tell my brother, see it, not as wall, see it as a resistance, if you can control and overcome this resistance (which you will), the repercussions in your life will be grateful, this will only make you stronger.

dood.. i'll admit they're taking the "easy" way out..

but it takes a LOT of balls to kill yourself. Anyone who actually goes through with killing themself is far far braver then I.

Is this some kind of joke? Of course depression is real!! I've been diagnosed with depression!

#127706

Ill post this here to

I'm not even sure why I am subjecting myself to this, but heh, i am who I am.

I suffer from Panic disorder, I am not a whiney female, I am not starved for attention, nor am I abusing the system.

I too thought these things, until one day BAM, it hit me like a ton of bricks. For no good reason, visiting the local mall, my eyesight starts going dark, I am dizzy, hot and cold at the same time, lightheaded, heart pounding out of my chest and feel as though my body is physically shutting down. I know it sounds retarded, but being a guy I just did the best I could.

One week of feeling like this. Couldnt leave the house, didnt eat, lost about 15lbs, which for me is a ****load. Anytime i ventured anyway, i physically felt as thought my world was caving in on me. I honestly don't know how to describe it other than the worst nightmare you have ever had where you wake up terrified. Picture feeling that way for no explainable reason. Picture being at the bar or wherever with your buds, and having this intense feeling of fear come over you that you can't control. Your mind starts telling you soemthing is wrong with your body and you are in danger and need to leave.

I know the smartass will say, "just tell yourself nothing is wrong" You can tell yourself you are fine till you are blue in the face, but it doesnt change anything. It's like having the flu and feeling like **** and telling yourself "im not sick I feel fine"

I am on an antidepressant, which I was up until a year ago totally against, and I thought the same as many of you, it over prescribed, it is a money hungry system drugging all of humanity, people dont know how to deal with problems, they need to grow up. Maybe all of this is true, but when these mental problems manifest themselves into physical symptoms that you cannot contol, it becomes a whole new ballgame.

My situation was so bad, that I developed severe agoraphobia (afraid of public spaces) because everytime I went out, panic would strike.

A year before this happened, I was happy go lucky, no problems, no worries, looked forward to everyday. Loved mt biking, rock climbing, you name it I did it. I have always been an active person, but was always a touch of a hypochrondriac (convinced I have every ailment in the world)

I am not a freak, there is nothing wrong with me, I am not different from anyone else, I just deal with stress differently.

As I said I am on an anti deprassant, and it helps better than anyone could imagine. No, I'm not void of emotion, or walk around like a zombie, or different in anyway since being on the meds, i feel like my oldself.

You have to no your body, and when my doctor first prescribed me this, and that and the other thing, i listend to him and took it all. Well when I complained to him about the way I felt on these meds, his solution was to up the dosage. I'm smart enough and had done enough research on teh subject to know that i shouldnt feel like this. So I disregarded his advice (please dont do this, I don';t recommend this at all, listen and trust your doctor, but know your body)

After 5 months of feeling like garbage on these meds (side effects of fun) I found a new doctor whom I told I wanted off of this crap and now. He agreed with me. I went off for two weeks before hard core symptoms returned. Back to the doctor, told him my situation told him I hated meds, and he gave me something new and told me if it made me feel worse to call him.

I have never felt better. Not perfect, but better than I had. Next step in this is some sort of therapy. As I said I used to be the life of the party type of guy, now when hitting the bars, I am just all sorts of nervous for some odd reason.

Ill finish this later
