Ever Tried Linux?
Technicallity - OSX has Unix underneath it, not Linux. Linux comes from Linus' (Torvalds, creator of Linux) Unix.

Yeah linux is ok, there just arnt egnouf polished apps for linux as there is for windows, ie no dock, firebird kinda sucks in it, barly any games, only fugly gaim for IMing, freaky laid out photoshop clone and did i meantion no good dock? Gnome kicks ass tho, i wish you could run it insteaad of explorer.

/me is nitpicking:
OSX does NOT have UNIX under it. UNIX is a trademarked term and you need to pass a whole bunch of tests (that cost a whole lot of money) to be called UNIX.
OSX is based off a mix of BSD and MACH, both are UNIX clones, like linux.
I voted "no" because I feel ironic today.

Second, I find linux polished more in most areas. This is especially true for this crowd that likes customizing. There is no need to jump through hurdles to change something in linux (the OS). But I could see a little differently if you mean for the complete ****. But we're not ****s here.
1. There is a dock. Linux (and other UNIX-clones) have had a dock way before Windows. Ever heard of WindowMaker or Afterstep? Sure, they have no eye candy, but they are clones of the REAL dock from NeXT. But anyway, the dock system isn't that great IMO, but it is preference. I prefer a strong Window Manager system.
2. Yeah, we lack many games. It's getting better, but I don't play many games so I don't care.
3. GIMP is in no way a photoshop clone. They laid it out the way it is because the interface is BETTER. MDI is just a stupid hack and is being phased out of everything. The reason people need MDI is because the Windows Window Manager sucks. No window scrolling/shading built in, no virtual desktops built in, no "zoom", only "maximize", no tabs, and the list goes on and on.
4. Firebird runs 10x better on *nix than on Windows.
5. GAIM is fine. It crashes every once in a great while for me though, so that sucks.

Linux is hardly perfect. People just make judgements based on one linux experience. I have used Windows, OSX, and Linux (and BSD) extensively for a long time (e.g. running them all for years), so I think I'm pretty informed.

I've tried OS X (don't own a Mac though 
) and I have Fedora Core installed on my PC right now. Yes, from a user interface standpoint, Linux still doesn't compare to OS X, but it's getting better. And yes, there is a dearth of good apps, but when I do find them, they are usually of excellent quality.

I beg to differ. Firefox kicks ass on my Fedora distro. Gaim isn't "fugly" in my opinion, but the GIMP does feel awkward (from a long-time Photoshop user's perspective, that is).
Gnome kicks ass tho
Agreed. The anti-aliasing looks (almost) as good as in OS X, and there are some excellent themes (including Milk...mmm...).

firefox looks great on linux. as for dock, there are a few docks out there, granted they're not as good as real osx or windows docks, but they still get the job done.

the first time was a redhat clone, then I got something better, then I tried other "flavors" but I always got the "not so impossible to use" versions but I never tried slack... they said, people said, that you need configure everything by yourself... I guess by now they got some PnP stuff but anyway... I'm using windows now...

yes - using knoppix live linux on CD - did the hd install on my laptop and my second pc after using it off the cd for a while 
love being able to update / download using apt-get functions in a console window
I had no Windows on my PC for about 2 Years, only installed Win on the second partition because I need a good vectorbased suite (Illustrator/Freehand)
I'm not gamins so the lack of games doesn't matter for me.
And Firebird is the best Browser forget uncompatible Opera and Mr. Security Hole Internet Explorer.
then gimp :rant: this is NO Photoshop Clone, and its FREE. I don't wanna know how many of you freaks payed for photoshop. (Anyone?!?! :naughty: )
And if your not in printbusiness and need CMYK Colors gimp will do everything you need (Did I say for FREE?!?)
For IM there are with SIM and Kopete 2 perfect Clients. Especially SIM, never found a good one like that for win
I've installed Suse 9.1 personal edition on my laptop. It ran slow because it's only a 233mhz w/ 128mb ram. I also tried Mandrake 10 community on my pc. Mandrake was nice, but it didn't recognize my hardware. I would like to try a live cd of Linux, but I'm wondering...how do you download and install a program using a live cd? Is it possible?
Hmmm~ would you mind recommend a good linux build? I used SuSE, and sometimes Knoppix LiveCD in my laptop (i loooooooooove kismet)... but since i'll be building a... nice pc, some time later, i'll like to instal linux as well (if ya have 3hdd's use them... er... smartly?) soooooooooo~

I've tried Knoppix KDE and Mandrake and, although I'm sure there are better Linux Distro's out there, I'm not going back any time soon. I need Dreamweaver to much now.
tried suse. but coulden't get it to network properlly. it would be great if my isp provider provides linux support
I've got ArchLinux dual-booting beside XP on this machine. Only reason I keep XP around really is for the game availability. I'd install Wine and play around with it, but this way is just easier and has a higher chance of success.
Wierless drivers were interesting to set up though, but I got them workin', with some help.
