[help] How Do I Skin The Turn Off Computer Screen?

This might seem rather old hat, but how do I skin the small screen with

the STANDBY, TURN OFF, RESTART Screen?

And can someone give me the links to either Brushed, Aqua, Panther, ti Series skins?

Thanks!

I think msgina.dll, not quite sure...

Yup, the bitmaps are in msgina.dll

This dialog made me want to throw my computer out the window when I first started modding files. If you change the background BMP, you must plan out where everything must be placed then resize the dialog accordingly. I eventually got the hang of it.

/ Plain white background BMP

/ no caption buttons

/ changed BMP buttons to pushbuttons (they are now skinned using the VS)

/ added in a BMP of a laptop

click for bigger:

You can get a real nice looking dialog, but you have to mess around a bit to get it right.

everytime i try to edit msgina, it tells me i can't edit it since it's in use... normal or safe mode. i wanted to do something like sketchings a while ago, but gave up. anyone know how to get around that?

Did you make a copy of the file, then try to edit the copy?

You may even have to rename the copied file before editing it. Then change the name back, use replacer and see what happens. I read somewhere (can't remember where, could even have been in these forums...) that XP may latch onto a copied system file and think it's the original. Never happened to me though.

Good luck.

you can't edit because it's in use. copy msgina.dll to the desktop first and edit the copy. save the mod and put it somewhere, then replace with replacer.

reboot and you're all set. :)

actually, let me amend what i wrote... for some reason, it did let me do some changes to the file without making a backup... i rebooted to see what it would do, make sure the buttons were in the right place. then when i went to finish it up and put a new background in, that's when it gave me that error. this was about 2 weeks ago... since then, i'm left with this monstrosity. i'll try using replacer like you guys recommended. it's just weird that it did let me edit it once.

thanks for that, it is working now...

If you want the buttons to continue being BMPs, you'll have to make yuor own or extract one from someone else's system file. Yuo could check with StefanKa's msgina.dll to see if it will work for you.

Another thing to do is right-click each button and choose "edit control" in the dialog and switch the attribute from "bitmap" to "pushbutton." That way, each button will be skinned using your visual style. Since the buttons will have titles on them, you can delete the white BMPs under the buttons that give the titles.

If none of that makes sense, then just edit the last bitmap file under the "bitmaps" tree directory, it holds the states for all three or four buttons.

For aqua buttons, you could also grab aquagrl's AquaElements PNG and use what you need.
