Ebay

I saw an item on ebay today that i'm interested in buying. it is at $150.00, there are nine bids and it started yesterday, the bidding ends march third.

I have never "ebayed" before and i want to know what you guys think the price will be before the bidding finnaly closes. Do you think it could go all the way up to $200?

Please tell me about your past experiances with eBay.

the final price depends on lots of things, but you can analyze it. look at the price signals: e.g. retail price, quality/condition of the item, the number of bidders, the number of bids at the moment, the rate of change of bids, time left, etc. you can usually form educated opinions about the final auction price.

also find other auctions on ebay for the same good; there are usually several auctions operating simultaneously. 1) you can see the final auction price of the auction if it has ended, 2) you can get an idea about what people are willing to pay, and 3) you give yourself another option in case you lose the current auction.

theoretically speaking, you could put in your max valuation right now and ebay will automatically increase the bids in your favor at the lowest possible cost to you (i.e. the smallest incremental increases). the problem with this is, you set yourself up for a price war. so you should snipe (follow timmie's advice). there's even software available to help you snipe. people know this, so you'll be competing with other snipers, or you might face the fact that someone has already placed his max bid way above yours, in which case it won't matter whether you snipe or not.

this issue is so germane, as i'm doing my research thesis on ebay.
