Looking For New Job

Well, my 3.5 years in retail has ended today, when I was "let go of" because of the inability for my management to work with my schedule. (gotta say, though, it was fun while it lasted, even though sometimes retail is kinda rough).

I am looking for a new job. I'm a college student (19), and so I can't work full time, and am looking for something that'll pay $9-10 an hour...

I was actually strongly considering waiting tables at a restaurant (lots of those nearby!), but have never done that before, so I'm not sure what to expect. (I hear, however, that it's great money! Can anybody comment on this?)

Any thoughts/ideas on possibly using my computing knowledge in order to get a job at least semi-related to technology would be appreciated, too!

Either way, I might end up trying waiting tables... We'll see what happens.

So anybody have any ideas on what I should be looking for?

Why dont you get a job on campus? Im a student cheif here and i get paid like 8.50$ an hour. There also EXTREMLY leaniant on my schedual, and let me study when i dont have anything to do.

where exactly are you? you would have more variety if you went to NYU as opposed to university of some small town.

i agree with lostspyder. students here can work in the library, computer, be rescons (tech support people who go around campus), security monitors (having people sign in when they enter the dorms late at night), etc. you might find a good campus job.

Thanks for the replies already. I live in North Carolina. I would possibly get a job at my school, but for some reason that hasn't appealed to me thus far. I don't live on campus (I travel to and from school - no reason to dish out thousands of dollars when my home is only 10 minutes away).

I used to work for Best Buy...now I'm looking for something slightly different. Nothing particularly bad about retail (hey, you take them as they come, and it was really fun while it lasted), but I need a change...

If I got a job on campus it'd be working for the IT department and fixing computers and stuff...I don't really wanna do something outside of that at school.

Does anybody have experience waiting tables? Somehow that's appealing to me. I hear that, although it's hard work, it pays well. I'm willing to try it.

I just got a job waiting tables for a small, local restaurant - not one of those country-bumpkin diners either. We're actually in Texas Monthly, the magazine, this month. I've made about $2000 USD in one month.

It also depends on what kind of patrons visit the restaurant you work at. Lawyers, doctors, town socialites, and "West End Wandas" - the OLD OLD rich ladies from the West End - are regulars where I work.

I say give it a shot. It can be fun some times - and you meet a lot of interesting people.

he's totally right; don't work foodservices--everyone i know hates it

except of course, hot chicks; which get monster tips just for being fly (i.e. my friend who's a cocktail waitress and earns $100/night alone in tips)

if you're on this website i assume you're somewhat computer literate; why don't you try working for your school's IT dept? i used to work in the computer labs and all i had to do was sit there and make sure people didn't steal anything. $9/hr and all I did was surf the web. :rule:

i wait tables and i dont mind it. decent money for generally easy work, if you get good at it.

i bartend too and that is much much better.
