The Rhapsody Project

Found this on OSNews:

"Our main goal is to complete the Rhapsody OS and make it an OS that people would like to use. We aim for end users and hope to bring them what Apple has brought their customers for the past 20 years - the simplicity and style which Mac OS has."

The road is long, but we belive that we can do it.

Well, i don't think so....

I think the question with this is not whether or not they could, but rather if they SHOULD.

They probably can't get the GUI to be just like OSX without the source code (and please don't tell me about darwin, that contains no GUI code or other libraries that OSX needs), but they can make a useable OS. The only question is the legality of it which I believe is not legal.

Let's say apple saw this and decided to really crack down on all people trying to get apple stuff on PC hardware including all themes, etc.

To put the shoe on the other foot it's kind of like taking the version of NT that ran on PPC and trying to make XP out of it and release that.

Well, apple continued working on rhapsody... dropped the x86 version and made it OSX. So I imagine that it's still copyrighted to Apple.... so I don't see them being happy about it. Think about it, the main differences between NeXT\OPENSTEP\Rhapsody\OSX are revisions of underlying technology (mach, BSD subsystem, postscript display system), they all have .app's (terminal, chess, the same finder), and the GUI they could keep the platinum looking interface but it's still Apple's OS to do with what they see fit (release it\don't release it).

More power to them... I have Rhapsody DR2, Its f*cking cool. I have used it.. .Id have it now but Windows can't recognis the Partiotion, so i cnat dual-boot

I'm not really against them, but still. I stand by what I said. I am keeping an eye on them to see how Apple reacts to this. I think it's a little naive to think that Apple would sit by and say nothing about them modifying and redistributing a whole OS of theirs.

#118770

Actually, they could do everything Apple did.

1. They have the OpenStep API

2. They have all the underlying technology with the freedesktop.org xserver

3. They have Darwin (wouldnt need it though)

WILL they do an "osx for the pc"? I dont think so though. So yeah, I agree with smoke.

Well, i don't think so....

The OS exists, but apps for it are hard to find. It's basically (for those not in the know) Apple's intel based OS 10 with an OS 9 appearance

When I ran Rhapsody, I had about 5 apps working including Doom, but that was about a year and a half ago, so i would bet they have mreo avaiable for it.

oh, and when Screenshots become available, look at the root volume and it should have my name on it...hehe

My copy of Rhapsody circled the net the most.
