ok...i know this have been discussed before but i acn't find the thread...
i wnt to install linux after being long enslaved by windows but i need to know a few things:
1_i have a winlinux2003...is it good(especially in themeing) or shall i look for another ditro
2_is it cimpatiple with my drivers or do i have to download new versions(Ati rage 32 vga....creative sound plaster pc1....motorolla modem)
3_any advice is more than welcome

Don't know about winlinux. I'd recommend a version such as Mandrake or Red Hat though - something well known.
Drivers should be OK - Modem may be a problem. Have a search around - if you find linux drivers - great, if not, just hope for the best.
I'd recommend that you install it on a seperate partition as well, so that you've always got windows to fall back on if (for example) your modem didn't work
Anyway - that's my two cents

i've never heard of winlinux. but judging from the name it's some sh¡tty distro aimed to get néwb's like you to choose it first.
Go with RedHat 9. As for drivers, no one distro has more drivers then the other. One may have the driver support out-of-the-box, but it's the kernel that has the drivers, and they all use the same linux kernel.
Before migrating to linux, go into your Device Manager. (Control Panel, System, Hardware Tab, Device Manager)
Write down the names of your key hardware that you want to make sure will work. (ie: Vid Card, Network Card/Modem, Sound Card)
Then just search google, "ati blah linux driver" or "linux howto ati blah" and see what you find. You may have to print out instructions, boot into linux, and compile some stuff or patch some stuff to get it to work, but odds are with a little Research and work you can get anything working in linux, even if it is sometime's half ass.
The biggest problem you may run into is if you have a winmodem, sure lots of winmodems are being ported over to linux, there are sitll countless ones that are not. You may search linmodems.org to see if your's is supported.
Other then that, best I can say is ditch that winlinux sh¡t, and go with a real established distrobution.
Edit: Just tried going to winlinux's site and it's littered with MySQL errors, if they can't configure a damn webpage to work properly, i have little faith in them building a real distribution.
Edit 2: NO ONE DISTRO IS MORE CUSTOMIZABLE THEN ANY OTHER ONE. THEY'RE ALL THE SAME DAMN OS WITH THE SAME DAMN SOFTWARE. kthx!
A distro I am using at the moment is Fedora Core 1 (part of Red Hat) - It's served me well over the last couple of months - it seems fairly stable 
And it looks pretty good too!!

looks like yer right...the winlinux distro in total s h i t i'm going for either redhat or feodora...but the installation is kinda difficult for a win slave!!!!
winlinux isnt good, iv used it, its only if your afraid to partition your harddrive, it installs the linux stuff in your c: drive. But that only works with the fat32 system and the ability to boot into dos. I sugest you to download Mandrake or Fedora core 1. Winlinux isnt worth it.

I don't seem to undestand the partitioning of the hard drive in linux installation (Mandrake) am i supposed to reformat and partition my whole hd....i have 3 partitions (c:2.79 GB...D:4.65...e: 67)
what do you recommend me to do?!....should i repartition?!....and if i do hoe much space should i give to the system?!....
i really can't understand the thing about the system needing three partitions for itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need two partitions. One for all your data, and one as a swap partition. I recommend having windows on one as well (if you want). Swap partitions are formatted using the swap format, and others usually as NTFS or Fat32. You could merge two of your existing partitions together.....
ok i have 80 gb hd and i intend to reformat the whole thing with XP 6GB ...what would i make the others ?! suggestions are open
