Aqua-Soft ForumsMy laptop has a really stinky resolution 1024 by 768. I really want it to go higher, but i don't want to replace my graphics card. Is there any way to do this? I have a Radeon Mobility M6 graphics card (i think its manufactured by ATI). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sometimes the screensize is limited by the screen itself, the technology it uses and not so much the graphic card... 
, so no higher resolution possibilitys ever? Its an LCD, so that would make sense.

Have you tried doing this:
Right Click on your Desktop, go into properties, click on the Settings Tab, click on the button that says advanced then monitor, if you can lower the refresh rate then unclick the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display.

i used to have a screen that didn't go over 1024x768 >.< nasty thing it was.
i wanted to know (with out starting another topic) whats the highest screen res you've seen?
Even my old TNT2 can do over 2000x1600 Resolution, so its (almost) never your video card.
Try using Virtual Desktops. There are loads of programs out there for them, even MS has one (powertoys).
See if you can get one with scroll wheel desktop switching. I use this in Fluxbox and XFCE4, it rocks super hard.
If you are truly speaking of a laptop, then 1024 x 768 was probably as high as it will go.
Some newer laptops go up to 1280 x 1024 or even into the 1600 range (Voodoo makes one).

I think I know what you're referring to Duckie, but if he's on a laptop, isn't he limited by the actual number of pixels in the screen? I know if you don't use the optimum resolution on my mums laptop evrything looks like **** with jagged lines etc.
if tis a laptop, you are more or less screwed, LCD tech just wont do it

a graphics card certainyl aint gunna be holding you back, almost every card i have seen since AGP, and even a bit before has had the same max (2048x1536 at 60hz) and new top of the line card can do it at 75hz (9700pro and up, FX5800 and up, workstation cards) but thats really not an issue cause few monitors can take that
but if you are talking CRT (cause you were talkina bout buying anew monitor?)

it all depends on your monitor-
nicer monitors that run their max res on 75 or higher herts can generally be pushed to go higher with the sacrifice of refresh rate. However crappy monitors, like KDS (i have used just about every 17 in KDS, and they all are like this) can run 1024x768 great, but their "max res" will be like 1280x1024, you put it that high, or close too it, and the refresh rate drops to 60hz or lower, and i dont think that that is sufficient unless you like frequesnt headaches. My monitor for example, maxes at 1600x1200 at 75hz, but if you unlock the display modes it can go to the limit of the graphics card at 60hz, and maybe higher, but i dont have the GPU to take it-
anyway, pushing your res can be really bad for your refresh rate, and thus killing your eyes, but if you have a really nice monitor, (like my old acer) teh 60hz doesnt really look that bad- try it out, see if you can stand it :naughty:
Well...if i select anything above 1024 by 768 i get a screen where if i put my mouse to the right or left, or down or up, and the desktop sorta scrolls, is that what u meant contra?
Lol, actually i'm using my moniter at a 60 refresh rate though it can go to 200, and the hide modes checkbox is unselectable...
Wow, i changed my refresh rate to 200...and for some reason my dock is responding way better then before...more responsive...unfortuanatly the desktop sorta externds which sucks.
BTW, i have a 15 inch screen lcd on my laptop...but my friend htmlishard, has a widescreen 15 inch lcd, and his resolution goes up to 1600 by 1028 or something liek that.
I've head that deselecting "hide modes that my monitor cannot display" and selecting a higher refresh rate can fux0r your monitor :hmm:

well, you're using an unsupported refresh rate, so that can damage your monitor. i assume it's hidden for a reason.
...None of my refresh rates are hidden though...
no, see it cant screw a new monitor, but it can screw an old one, if you get the garbled screen (i think thats what you were talking about) that canbe bad for your monitor, but most likely it will be fine, newer monitors just shut off when you set it too high, or tell you thats what you did, if you are running at a res higher than you are suposed to be able to, at a lower refresh, thats fine too cause its less stress cause its a lower refresh rate, its all relative- and you cant up the res cause you have an LCD, just is a no go, tough luck
