Expire Wishlist

It's usually easier to plan program features from the beginning than to add them later (something known as "feature creep"). I don't expect to see the first version of Expire until at least June, so it's probably better to give siwu a few suggestions now rather than bothering him during his summer vacation. :smartass:

1. Corners activate after ___ ms (a good idea by siwu)

2. Screen margins: separate values for Top, Bottom, Left, and Right (so Expire does not cover ObjectBar, the taskbar, docks, etc.)

3. Enable/Disable animation

"Borrowed" from Panther:

4. New option: "Start Screen Saver"

5. Drag a file, hover over a thumbnail for a second (no mouse click), Expire brings that window to the front and you are still dragging the file

6. Be able to switch between different modes (show all thumbnails, show desktop, etc.) while Expire is active

7. When Expire is active, press Tab to show all thumbnails for one program, press Tab again to show all thumbs for the next program, etc. (Panther also uses the tilde ~ key to cycle backwards)

Again, this topic is just for suggestions. Do not ask siwu which ideas he will use or when it will be done! He's working on it. :moon:

Oh well, you should expect to see some releases before June :)

We plan to post some release as often as we can :)

(did everyone here tougth expire. would only be released in June ?)

@Mad_Mike:

great suggestions, I think all of them will be in :), because they're essential, at least to me :)

Siwu: feel free to close any threads that bother you about development. The rules are clear, member's shouldnt post "I want...I want" posts. We know it can annoy you. ;)

(this isn't one of those threads, I just figured I'll post about it before it gets out of hand).

june is so far  , take your time, but i can't wait, i'm so impatient :)

#116712

wishes:

1. winfx compatibility (i prefer it over yzshadow)

2. dropshadow for thumbs

3. rounded textbox background

4. no occasional 'black contents' for thumbnails... i don't know if this one is possible to avoid?

5. transparency of some sort for thumb so that rounded title bar corners do not result in a little black corner for thumbs.

out of leftfield wish:

1. 'expired' video app's thumb shows video running in the thumb :P

all of mad_mike's wishes would be great.

great app siwu. ;)

I was trying my best to find a fix for this bug in iEx 0.2, and by trial-and-error, I realized that setting the priority of iEx to "Realtime" in Task Manager did the trick. I haven't seen the "black-thumbnails" bug in quite a while with this workaround in place. Try it and see if it works. :)

Yeah, I know it sounds odd, but it seems to work...for me at least. *shrug*

Try it out...it can't do any harm, can it? Setting a CPU-intensive process to Realtime on a single processor system is just asking for trouble, but since iEx just makes use of your processor when you actually use it, it won't cause any problems.

If the blink was because you didn't know what he was talking about, while iEX is running, press Ctrl-alt-delete, then click on the "Processes" Tab, find "iEX.exe", right click on it, and under the "Set Priority" submenu, choose "Realtime".

A function to close "expired" windows would be great.

If possible with a klick on the close button of the window. If not, with a klick on the screenshot while pressing a key. Or with a right-click on the screenshot. Hou you want siwu ;)

Wishlist:

* Improved support for alternate shells. May already be resolved, but with, e.g., Blackbox for Windows the display is not cleared, instead having the thumbnails overlaid on open windows. Not a huge problem, just looks messy. This might even be down to the drawing code in BB4win... >.<

* Application exclusion method similar to that of Y'z Shadow, i.e. drag & point. A minor thing, but would round off usability of the app nicely.

Or, like most tab browsing internet browsers, clicking in the middle scroll wheel button (MOUSE3).

How about open source?

Yes, I know you're worried about others using your code for profit, but a license like the GPL could prevent that.

oh!! oh!! i have this realy good idea. Why dont you not read this thread and continue devolpment as you see fit(i feel as through your capable of this, but if your not well have to intervene), and if you have extra time come and ask what you think you should add on to it.

#124880

I can't see the harm of people suggesting things to Siwu, it is, after all, far easier to add features later if you had some idea of them beforehand. There are a huge number of ways which Siwu could write Expire and for the most part none are the 'right way' - but if he has suggestions about future features now, he can at least consider them while he writes his first rev of the new app, which will likely make their inclusion in the future a simpler task.

True, one or two are totaly fine, but the problem is that everyone wants the app to do exactly what THEY want it to do, and soon theres a whole list of 'sugestions' that would take years to code. I think that Siwu is capable of comming up wth ideas for his app that are within his programing ability, and he doesnt seem like the kinda guy that would just stop once it does what he wants it to.

#125216

I don't see him objecting either. How about we let people post whatever suggestions they like, and trust Siwu to select those he feels are suitable for future integration.

Do not ask siwu which ideas he will use...

@lostspyder,

siwu is smart enough to know that he doesn't have to use suggestions from anyone. He's going to make the program he wants to make, regardless of what any of us post. And he's doing it for school, so development of the first version can't very well be dragged out for years.

I just thought someone might come up with an idea that he would have included, had he thought of it himself, or perhaps a suggestion may inspire him to add a different feature. He was still in the design phase of the project when I created this topic, and he hasn't responded since that same day (possibly because he started coding and is already ignoring this thread).

At any rate, reading a few pages of posts isn't going to delay the release, and siwu has stated several times in the past that people showing interest in his programs is what keeps him motivated. Lastly, if he does happen to feel like incorporating a few ideas, it will only serve to make the arrival of the final product that much more exciting.

(P.S.- I think it bears repeating that he can and will close this topic if it bothers him.)
