Aqua-Soft ForumsOK, I was considering making an icon set, but I wasn't sure how to create the transparency in the .png files. Do I need any specific program? I just need to know how to making the white backrounds transparent so that they work in docks and such. Any help is appreciated 
Creating .png Icons
In your image editor (Photoshop, Paint Shot Pro), when you click on "New image", there should pop a window allowing you to set things like the size of the canvas and so on. On of the options usually is to set the background color. Set the color to "transparent", create your image and click "Save as...", select PNG from the list and you have a PNG with a transparent background. I use this all the time when I am creating custom icons and dock images for myself
Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. But the problem is that that wouldn't work for me. I'm making these .png icons from images I've got off the internet. So, they already have white backrounds. Is there a way to select all the white in an image, and make it transparent?
Copy the image into a new document with transparent background, select the area you want to make trans and hit delete. That should do it.
or you could use the background eraser tool in Photoshop

What Sid said. Use a soft edged brush and if you only want it partially transparent then drop the opacity of the brush down a bit.
