A while back my friend told me that on a TV channel called TechTV they have a show called "thescreensaver" he told me that they were showing how to do it, but i looked on their website and could not find anything. I was guessing it was with an older version of Mac. But yep i am sure that all of us would love to have XP and Panther on our PC

They haven't released OSX for the PC, even if the rumor of it existing is true. TechTV did not install OSX on another partition in a PC. What they did was take all the hardware of a Mac, and put it together with PC hardware in a case. They use a KVM (or similar) switch to switch the monitor between the two different video cards that are in the case. I don't quite remember if it they also did this, but people have also stuck in console hardware in with PC hardware though they all still function seperately and have seperate outputs they just are all together in the same case.

i remember reading this article, and i can try to find it for you

its actually 2 computers in one tower...and you say "but sakasune, how can that be?"

they took a G4 tower, put a mini-mini-PC in a drive bay (its the size a 5.25" drive, and it contains a CPU, HD, video and audio output (i think it contained a CD drive, but i'm not sure).

they used some kind of splitter/combiner to hook up the mac's video card and the PC drive video card.

long story short, you still need a mac for the setup

Am I invisible? That's what I just said.

#115459

Did anyone hear anything? Nah...I must have imagined it. ;)

#115462

I do believe everyone is talking about this site and article.

Visit here.

As for panther on a pc hard drive, your friend is full of bull$hit, it hasn't happened yet unless he was talking about an emulator, as you can run up to version Mac OS 8.1 under an emulator, but as for any PPC/Panther, it doesnt exist even if rumors of apple having a PC x86 port deep inside a hidden vault with killer cats wearing clown makeup ready to piss in your eyes and crap in your mouth til you die a stinky death persist.

Anyway, enjoy the link.

Yea i guess he was lying, but my dad's friend has a program that lets you switch between operating systems. My dad friend has Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 , and Windows XP all in one PC. Its a program called Commander. I just found out about it today and i do not know anything about this program. I cannot find anything on the web about it. I am suppose to go to my dad's work on Monday to find out how this program works. Uhmmm If any of you heard of this Program reply back as quick as possible. I am sure there is someone in this forum that knows about it.

Would it not be possible to run OsX, which is AFAIK based on BSD-Unix on a PC-BSD-Kernel??

Or simply recompile it on a PC??

#116508

At this time it is impossible to have mac os on pc because it's not the same hardware. <_

#116517

I found a website on it the name of it is System Commander. Heres a website that talks about it http://www.linguistsoftware.com/syscom.htm :pchawk:

System Commander 2000

System Commander 6 or 7

No the entire source of OSX is not available to compile anywhere. Only the BSD subsystem. If it was, someone would have already done it.

You can't even compile the entire OSX on a mac yourself either. You have to buy the OS.

Does anyone have any comments about the System Commander??

as you can run up to version Mac OS 8.1 under an emulator, but as for any PPC...

You can run 8.6; emulating a PPC machine. It's really keen.

The emulator:

well, if we wanna get technical, OSX does run on an x86 (IBM compatibel ****) however it isnt available for the public cause jobs put the kabosh on it, macworld a few years ago even had the showcase of OSX running on a pair of AthlonXPs

the BSD core (darwin) was a preexisting core, and is available for both x86 and PPC however all of the shell ontop of that (chocoa and aqua, which is alot more than jsut a skin) needs to be recompiled for teh different hardware, its a simple matter of number crunching, and working out a few kinks, it can be easily done, assuming you have the source code to OSX, whihc no one does, there was a SF.net project to build it form scrathc, but that also got teh hammer from apple. (although the showing at macworld was done by apple :P )

Don't revive an old thread just to post uninformed dribble. ;)

x86 does NOT mean "IBM Compatible". That is an old term used now to refer to "PCs". Opterons are x86, but they are hardly desktop (PC) processors. x86 is an intel instruction set (and x86-64 is an AMD one).

Have you ever compiled OSX for the "PC"? I doubt, so don't say "easily done". You have no idea how hard it is/was for OSX to be ported.

And Darwin was not a pre-existing core. MOST of it was proprietary developed by Apple and NeXT, which was released to the public and then had BSD code incorporated into it.

i know x86 does not mean ibm compatible, i'm not an idiot, but i was making clear what it mean by usiong a simaler term, and opertrons are perfectly feesable desktop cpus, not necisarily for personal use, but even so i know pleny of people who use em for home

i do not know that it is "easily done" and certainly not first hand, and neither do you- "easy" is a relative term, compared to writing osx from the ground up for x86, it would be very easy, and i have heard, from people who would know, that it is "not that hard"

and also explain why the hell apple would have spent enough man power to do the "hard task" of porting OSX to x86 if they were just gunna scrap it after finishing the project.

the one "un-educated" thing i said was that darwin was preexisting, clearly (form what i've heard form you) if was developed by apple, probably for OSX in particular, regardless, it was released before OSX, and is available for both x86 and ppc (the fact that it was already around is kinda useless trivia, the fact that its for both x86 and ppc, is whats important, i am right on that)

and lastly, this iis not really an old thread, not only is it less than 20 days old, it was one of the first threads in teh PC section, last time i checked, a 2 day old thread in another section could be as far as 3 pages in, i didnt bother to read the date because it was already at the top of the list
