Gui Olympics 2004

why, people, haven't i seen any news about this... skinners, iconners, stylists... stand together if you have legs and represent your community. cash, prizes, reputations and porkchops are at stake! (ok, so maybe not porkchops)

go forth and see what i'm talking about:

i'm surprised there's not more feedback about this... ok, maybe i was too limited in my rallying together... people without legs can participate too. i would have thought the newsposters would have put a little something on the front page to get people thinking about it (unless this site doesn't participate for a reason??) it doesn't even necessarily have to be representing a site, individuals or teams can go in on their own.

I think the biggest problem in this case is that most of the icons/themes and such released in this community are usualy ports/mod from mac themes and such, im not sure how well that would be taken... or if taken as entries at all for that matter.

ANyone knows about this particular aspect?, C'mon people, Pork Chops are -or arent- at stake here!

good idea!!!

but how can those themes support nonenglish like chinese???

i love mac skins very much, but those fantasy articles just cant run properly on my machine?

yea AS would stir up some issues with Apple for sure if they were mentioned. Though i dont think any less of mac ports, since they are mostly creative extensions of the os X+, they are as worthy as any theme.

I dont wanna see AS turn into a huge thing at the same time, like it said in the article some prefer to keep it as a smalltime "hobby". Why does everything have to be marketed! fakin capitalism.

Keep it small and manageable i say.

AFAIK the GUI Olympics is for people who make totally original skins. Unless they have a catagory for ports which I haven't looked into.

from neowin

The GUI Olympics 2004 begins today. The GUI Olympics is a Inter-website contest in which people compete for over $10,000 in cash and prizes. Anyone can enter as an individual or as part of a team.

There are 3 categories in this year's contest:

1) Winamp 5 skins

2) Icon packages (using IconPackager)

3) Visual Styles (in WindowBlinds format)

The contest is sponsored by Nullsoft, Microsoft, Stardock, ATI, Eclipsit and nVidia as well as supported by Microsoft. All of which are providing prizes. The judges will be from Neowin, deviantART, Stardock, and Nullsoft and judging won't begin until early April (over a month of now) giving plenty of time for people to start making their skins and themes. There are enough prizes that pretty much anyone who enters something is likely to win *something* even if it's just a Microsoft T-shirt. Besides cold hard cash for winners, prizes include a Microsfot xBOX, ATI video cards, MicroAngelo icon software, Stardock Object Desktop, and more.

does anyone find it odd that MS is sponsoring this, since it requires people to hack their product to use the visual styles? ;)
