Messenger Service

What is this!? I get pop up window titled messenger service with ads, once every hour. I just reformatted my computer. I'm pretty sure i have no viruses and this is like the second time i've been online since i reformatted my comp, and i only came here, and i didn't download anything. IT can't be spyware. Is it a prog or dll? How do i get rid of it? Usually when playing multiplayer games on the internet, i stay online more then an hour, most of the games don't support alt-tab so my screen keeps blinkin: game, explorer, game, explorer, and i can't click on anything. It usually results in me restarting my comp. How do i get rid of "messenger service" pop up?

nm, i found it while browsing aqua-soft

as for the messenger service, go to run > services.msc and disable the "messenger" service. you don't need it, and you'll get lots of spam like that.

you should also have antivirus and firewall programs up and running.

 i posted that a while back. i always disable that service immediately after a reformat. :)

If you need more information about windows' services, check out Black Viper's site. Many of you have heard of it, but those who doesn't know it definately check it out. I have 4 processes less running thanks to his guides.

Thank again for the link, I lost it awhile ago.

Damn messenger, that's one of the first things to go after a re-install.

I think everyone gets them. Is it just me or is that illegal? It's spam right?

#114567

I got it once, and it was because I forgot to put my firewall on and that service was on.

And yes I believe it is illegal for them to do that.

...Aren't the ads by microsoft? How can they do it if its illegal, can't people sue em?

#114864

No, they arent from microsoft. The messenger service is a ms service, it was if im not mistaken originally designed for use across a network to notify users of this or that. The problem is that ir is basically open to outside of a network, and with an ip address and the right program, anyone could send you a messenger alert

No... it's not illegal.

Just kill the service.

SPAM is not illegal... Yet.

But it will be very soon.
