I read an article off of a forum on gamespot saying that Intel's glory days are over because of the Athlon 64. It makes sense. All I can say is WOW.

its not completely fact but it does make sense. well...DEBATE! What will be the fate of Intel? Oh and im not an AMD fanboy. i'm the proud owner of a p4 3.0 ghz.

Sorta makes sense......but what i don't get is that x86 in first article is supposed to be a different processor architecture then intel pentium...but i use x86 in my linux partition? I am now confused.

I have no idea. Call AMD. lol but its all the same architecture overall. of course the chips are different. they both get the exact same job done...athlon slower but goes through less processes than the p4. and athlon has more bandwidth now...i was about ot start hating amd because of its 400 mhz system bus and slower processors. since they dropped the whole 3200+, 2500+ thing (finally..its a scheme because they coudlnt keep up. i benchmarked systems against each other...trust me) they are doing A LOT better. athlon was better than p4 originally but p4 shone through after time. now...64 will reign. intel MUST make a consumer version of a 64 chip AND is forced to keep x86 architecture.

x86 is an architecture. the Athlon64/opteron is x86 + another standard. Its backwards compatible. Right now, Athlon and Pentium are x86. So yes, x86 can be 64bit.

ravi113: Those are amazing generalizations. You managed to sum up one of the most complex systems in less than a paragraph and declare someone a winner.

This debate will never end. Pick whatever the hell you want, neither companies chips are faster in every benchmark/situation.

I did not declare a winner. I simply posted something interesting. As for one paragraph, woudl you like me to write a book about it? I didn't think so. But yeah x86 is an architecture and as i was saying to doesnt matter what the chip is, itll fit teh architecture and thus run whatever progs can work under that architecture.

the point is that athlon fx-51 is performing better in most tests. i'm a gamer. im building a gaming pc. even if the dualie 2ghz g5 did beat the fx-51 at some tests...its still a singular fx-51. adobe optimizes for 2 processors so you cant say its not optimized.

if i had the money i woudl seirously consider the dualie g5. its awesome. i love panther. i love apple. proud owner of a $3000 Apple 2e with automated tilting screen and huge bubblejet printer. I feel bad for em adn want to see em come up in the race against x86.

but right now i'd go with what is best for gaming. again, i am a gamer. i play games. i dont care about video rendering. panther looks awesome, which is why i am here. it is functional. it is good. so is windows. they both can get me around. im just looking for games. and right now, the fx-51 seems to be the best choice.

intel will match it when there is actually a demand for 64-bit. I'm glad AMD released it though to start the movement forward.

How can you put it so bluntly that Intel will come out with something? I'm sure they will eventually. they cant go out of business. BUT...theyve been trying for awhile now. Look at the Itanium series. it's improving but there are MANY steps towards building a good server processor (many are going with the G5 or Opteron) and for consumers...they ahve LOTS of work ahead of them. read the article. in fact, look up the structure of the Itanium. If their new chip isnt itanium based, they will have to formulate a completely new chip. Imagine how hard that will be. as for the itanium based thing, theyve been trying and trying and simply cant get it down to a consumer price range. i sure hope they come through...intel has been a dedicated company for years. as for the g5...i hope IBM releases a faster G5 sometime sooner than motorolla did with the g4. tahts why apple left motorolla...u know how long it took for them to up the frequency from 500 mhz? MONTHS and MONTHS! i hope ibm does better..for apples sake. they need this.

oh and uh, you are VERY misinformed. there is a dire need for 64-bit technology and smaller processors. look how how processors are getting nowadays. with the stock fan, the new prescott is overheating. STOCK FAN! its supposed to be VERY overclockable but at the temperatures its already at (and it cant handle the stock fan...60 degrees celsius is quite hot) i dont know....

so yes, there is a demand for 64-bit. never mouth off unless you know. we need slower processors like the g5 and athlon 64 that are more efficient and can get more done at those slower speeds so the core temperature can remain lower.

in other words...

64bit has nothing to do with processor heat/size.

64bit will not be faster until all the software is optimized for it (5+ years). The only immediate benefits will be being able to address over 4GB of RAM.
