whenever i boot up in the morning, i hear a faint, but audible, buzzing or electrical-like sound emanating from my computer. i thought it was the hard drive, but it doesn't seem like the sound coincides with the led on the front panel. could it be a fan or psu?

hmm, try going into bios, and see if there is anthing differnt in the power output or the fan speed...
just a thought.
Look for dust on the edges of fan blades. If there is a build-up, blow it off using a can off compressed air.
just hoover your case inside. if the buzz is still there turn the pc on with the case open hold your ear near the pc and try to locate where the buzz comes from. old psu's tend to make funny noises. as old fans do. and old drives. could be anything, so try to locate where the sound comes from.
Maybe: Its your cpu heatsinks that are expanding, from the heat of your cpu. That causes the noise to coinside with the heatsink, because its expanding from the R.E.M. capasitor. Thus creating it very easily to blow up, if it is not taken care of. :blowup:

I'm not sure of the cause either.....but I have a similar problem.
When I turn on my computer after it has been off for more than 2-3 hours,
I get a buzzing/humming noise coming from my case speaker.
It lasts for 1 to 4 seconds and doesn't actually start booting up 'till its done.
I boots normaly and I have no other issues.
Anybody have any ideas on my buzzing???
my computer runs fine, so i don't think it's much of a problem, but i'll be checking for dust later.
it doesn't sound like normal dust, though--more like an electrical buzz.
ya.. if i hear a weird noise in a computer. first thing I do is strip 'er down. then i put my head in it like a lion's mouth, and see what's making a noise. Then i poke at it. that usually fixes it. just poke it a few times.
well, i opened my case up, did some cleaning, and i tried to pinpoint it, but i couldn't figure out where it was coming from.
it really sounds like the hard drive is reading something. oh well.

nah ive gotten that on several computers ive worked on. It makes that sound right untill the OS boots right? I dont think its anything wo worry about, as long as the buzzing sound doesnt continue after boot. I havent been able to pinpoint this as well, and havent found anyone else that can explain it.
Could it be a hard drive? Mabie take it out of the case and just have the cables run outside and stick your ear realy close by.
do you have some sort of fan controler on, cause i know my moms compaq will run the fan at full RPM till windows loads up then it will quiet way down.
i'm loving the heatsink, man. 
it's not a big deal since everything is working perfectly for me. i was just wondering, that's all, as it is a little odd.
and no, i'm not using any fan controller of any kind, though i'm thinking of purchasing one.
but you're probably right. it's probably either the hard drive or the fans spinning at a different rpm. no biggie.

i just hope changes in noise levels like this don't indicate problems for hard drives.
I had that exact same thing. I tried tracking it down to no end for quite some time. I finally figured out what my problem was. When the hard drives and CD drives fire up for the first time when I turn my PC on, the slight vibrations they care where causeing the noise in the housing. I ended up re-tightening all the screws, and everything else that I could, and got it to stop.
Just remember to tighten everything whether you think it could be the cause or not. That fix worked for me, just thought I would share.

edit: well i tightened everything up (i'm glad i took the effort. my cd drive was loose!), but i still have the sounds. it's probably no big deal. the wd diagnostic tools said my drives passed, so i'm not that worried.
Mabie its the hard drives starting up and not having their rotational inertia yet, and the thing is vibrating.
It may be an electrical buzz from interference inside the computer coming out of the little internal speaker. Try unplugging that and see if the noise persists. I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be coming from the speaker.
