A Complete Panther(or Just Os X) Program

So many of us who have used OSX have seen the classic mac application. How about Virtual PC? Both programs emulate a different OS but without modding any system files, just a program and that is all. What i am trying to get at is this.

Why not take all of the aqua-apps that everyone has contributed to A-S, sounds wallpapers, apps, skins, etc and put them in a program that you can run as a desktop like virtual PC. Of course every aspect of OSX (ie shading, apps, cursors and window transition effects) would be in the program too. Its like taking osx and turning it into a OS-Program Hybrid.

Is this possible?

Well since stardock owns many of the appications that are used to achive TRUE emulation, no. Whats wrong with getting to chose what applications you want and dont?

Wow- I had that very same idea... That would be cool becuase it would be just like running a Mac OS X Emulation.

Classic is not emulation. It's running a copy of OS9 over OSX directly without emulating any hardware (especially since it's still on the same hardware). It doesn't use any emulator like virtual PC to run.

Oh yeah, and all the programs use to modify windows don't make an OS on their own. You'd still need to run a copy of XP in virtual PC in order to run them but that would just make things slower.

A shell could be made that is totally OSX'ish, and there was a project not too long ago to do this. But I never kept track of what happened with that. A shell is a desktop replacement. It doesn't run in a window but it replaces explorer with a different desktop.

GnuStep is the key.

GnuStep is nearly Cocoa for unix/linux systems. the guys fo GnuStep allready working on a windows backend to get it working in windows without cygwin/X11.

why i tell you this? because cocoa apps can be ported to gnustep some just need to be recompiled to work in macosx/cocoa and gnustep. a good example is gnumail.app.

Good luck getting the source to iLife and other programs by Apple. BTW, Apple used to have something similar called Yellow Box, during the Rhapsody days.

I know that that's why I mentioned it, but not exactly... since additions\subtractions where made in OSX's version (Cocoa). Which GNUStep is adding as long as it doesn't interfere with the original functions. Plus Quartz, which is signifigantly different than DPS.

My point is that they had something to run .app's in windows at some point. I don't know what you have at home.

You would need the source codes from every program developed first off to truly "combine" all the programs. And I dont know how many developers would be willing to hand that over. Second, this venture would be far too great of a process to overcome. And not all aspects of OS X are covered by the available apps... Well, at least perfectly. . Anyways, what im saying is is that its a kewl idea if it can be pulled off but I dont know how rewarding the final product would be.

I mean, isnt that what we do now anyways? We run all the programs we can to mimic as closely as we can to OS X. So all you would be doing is putting that into one package?
