"Windows computers" >.< and Macs (Apples) use different architectures (in the processor and mobo), x86 for "Windows computers" and PPC for Macs, and therefore use different processors (and mobo's)
Anyway, the speeds in Ghz that you see are NOT nearly = . (1Ghz does not = 1Ghz)
I think you mean if PC Ghz =x , and G4 Ghz =y then what does the G4 y value mean in terms in X pc value.
G3's,G4's (made by Motorola) carry a speed rating slightly lower then its PC value.
Even though theres more to the story then simple cpu speed. While a 1 Ghz G4 cpu will run around a 850-900 mhz PC cpu in terms of overall speed, the Cpu runs OS X and PPC applications much faster then a PC ( even though it could never run the applications)
So even though the G4 are not speed demons in terms of PC speed, they whip ass faster and better then any PC would be able to do using the os and applications.
Now its a whole different story with G5's, these numbers and raw speed are the same or beyond its PC brothers. But then again, you are talking about a CPU not made by Motorola, and have a start as a serious server cpu.
So its really best to ignore the PC vs PPC cpu game and just get what runs best for you, try to use a machine close to what you looling at buying and make your decisions from that.
You cant even say a PC 1ghz, cause a 1ghz barton and a 1ghz P3 are two COMPLETLY diffrent speeds, ones probaly 2x as fast as the other. GHZ is a load of garbage, its like saying how fast a car wil go based on the number of cylinders it has.
i think if you're comparing cycles, then 1ghz = 1ghz no matter what. it's simply a measurement of frequency. i.e. 1in. = 1in. no matter what you're measuring.
the question is about performance, which is not equated with ghz simply. so a 2500+ (1.83 ghz or something) can be equivalent to 2.5ghz pentium, even if the frequencies are different.
the difference comes from the design architectures, risc vs. cisc. risc = reduced instruction set computing; cisc = complex instruction set computing. e.g. assign a risc chip 4 instructions to carry out one task, and assign the cisc chip the same task with one instruction, but the risc chip may carry it out faster.

But there are other issues here. Notebook computers seldom are as fast as there desktop counterparts. There components have to use less power so they on average are slower than a desktop computers parts to keep power consumption down and to keep the heat down. So taking this all into account where are we at this point.
A 1GHz G4 is probably close to performance to a 1.4 to 1.7GHz P4. Now that same G4 is probably close to the level of a 1.2 to 1.3GHz AMD of the time. We must remember that the PC has gone into the 2 to 3GHz level. You can buy a 2+GHZ PC notebook but you can't buy a 2GHZ PowerBook G4. So as it stands the PC notebook market is faster in every case until Apple releases a G5 PowerBook or a very tweaked G4. I just don't see that happening real soon because of cooling issues. Have you seen the size of the heat-sinks on a G5. They are even bigger than what is found on a 3.2GHz P4. Of course some of that is for looks.
So it depends on what is important for you. You can go ahead and buy what is essentially an obsolete G4 based PowerBook for allot of money or you can buy a very fast 2GHz AMD or P4 based notebook, and have all your software ready to go. You can always make XP on that notebook look and act like OS X and still have the horse power to use for other apps.
Beside Apple has been having problems with there PowerBook line and there iBook as well. Apple is always very stubborn to admit to hardware problems and they like to keep things like this under wraps.
Not to say if had I had a couple thousand lying around I wouldn't buy a Mac because I would. I just might have money like that in the near future and if all come to pass I will buy a G5 system and a top model iBook.
But you really need to think about what programs you use and then make sure there are OS X versions available now for you buy and use.
You have to remember that it isn't just changing over to another platform/OS; it is all the cost for all the software you now have to buy along the way. For example, if you use MS Office XP you are now going to have to buy the OS X version instead. Same with any games you like to play or if you use Adobe Photoshop. So start adding the cost of each piece of software you use regularly on your PC and tack that onto the price of the Mac of your choice. This is something that Apple doesn't tell you about when you go to buy. Stop and give this all allot of thought. If you are made of money than by all means go for the Apple. But really and truly stop and think of the true cost of the switch. I have, and until I can access my living-trust can't see making the change. It will cost me at least $2000 more to buy all the programs I use on my PC to get them for a G5. I am not joking about the cost either. So for me to have a Power Mac G5 that is as close to my present system it will cost $7,118.00 plus $2000 for software. That is $9118 dollars. Now not everyone is going the route I am but this gives you and idea. Let’s say you go for the 14” iBook. This is $1499 now add any sales tax you have in your state and add what the cost of your software is. Let’s say you will need to spend $500 on software. That isn’t unrealistic at all. That would cover MS Office, at least 4 games, and any other software you might use like Virtual PC so you can save a little money on other software titles. That is a total $1999 for the switch to Apple not the $1499 they say. You be the judge of what you need to do at this point. If you buy a new PC based Notebook computer you are ready to load all your software on it the minute you start it up. Well almost right away. Really stop and think about what it is really going to cost you in the end. I hope this helps.

It's only CPUs you say "Mhz" "Ghz" never Souncards, Graphics card, it's all the other instructions, and more that counts!
