Internet Explorer Issue

Internet Explorer is messed up on my machine (XP Home SP1).

I'm not exactly sure why, but when I try to launch it, I get an error report form that says the issue is with the file 'winshow.dll'.

I downloaded the latest security fix, but it didn't help.

Does anyone know what application has a reference to this dll file?

Is it some sort of corrupted plug-in?

I uninstalled the last couple things I put on, but nothing has worked so far.

I have other browsers that work fine, but my wife really just wants to turn it on and go, which means not messing with anything else, and error messages freak her out.

My next step is to re-install IE from SP1, but I have loaded all of the hotfixes and updates since SP1 was released.

Is there an easy way to repair the IE installation without having to reload all of the hotfixes?

I am planning to reformat and put a clean install of XP on it sometime soon (i.e. when I can get a new CD burner), but for the time being, I would prefer to fix this problem.

oh and.. it's always a fine idea to just merely search GOOGLE for the .dll giving you problems, that's all I've done.

I hadn't thought of any viral activity...

I hadn't used my computer in over a week, and I hadn't done anything to risk getting a virus.

As far as I can remember, my homepage was never switched or anything.

I guess I'll have to remove the little bugger next time I turn my machine on.

Try this:

Control-->Internet Options-->'Advanced' tab-->'Browser' section

Clear the check box that says "Allow 3rd party browser extensions".

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the help guys.

I finally got a chance to fix the problem last night, and it took all of 2 minutes to locate the registry entries and delete them.

Then I deleted the dll file and associated files and IE was back to normal.

It's amazing how little time there is for anything when there's a baby in the house.
