Aqua-Soft ForumsI've heard quite a few people talking about Bit Torrent, and how good it is. But it's all really confusing to me - I know it's some sort of file-distribution program, but then there's all this talk about bandwidth. Can anyone explain what it is and how it works? That would be much appreciated. Thanks :rule:

What do you want to know about banwidth exactly and how it relates to BT?
Well, from what I've picked up about BT, it somehow "shares" bandwidth to makes things go faster. But I don't know exactly - that's why I'm asking you.

Downloading/uoploading anything (includes browsing) uses bandwidth sort of the same way processes uses memory...and umm...yea
For a decent definition of bandwidth, clicky (their definition: The term is often used erroneously to mean data rate or capacity - the amount of data that is, or can be, sent through a given communications circuit per second), or wait until Stevie or dreamz shows up 
All you need to know about BitTorrent is that it's a Bandwidth Hog, and not always for the best performance.
Don't be surprised when you see that you are downloading something at 10kbps and you are uploading at 20kbps (We all agree that it should be the other way around).
Most of the time, when you have BitTorrent running, you won't be able to even browse the Internet.
Let me put this simple:
~ Pros: Usually fast downloads, lost of resources, lots of downloads, latest files, resume support.
~ Cons: Renders your connection useless for anything else while it's on, DL/UL rates don't always seem "fair".

dloading at night (no other bandwidth use) is the only way to get good dload rates (or any time you're not doing anything internet-related) >.< . Else your kbs plummet when you go try to use your browser/mp game
So it would be good if I started a download in late evening, then left it and came back in the morning?
Pity, that option isn't open to me. But I'm hearing good things about DC++.....

Download rates depend on how many "Seeds" and "Leechers" are available for each "Torrent". So if you are not going to use your computer during the day, leave it on downloading. The fact that we say "Late at night" is because we use the computers during the day and at night we can leave them on downloading.
• Seeds: A user who has a BitTorrent client connected to the P2P Network AND has the file you are trying to download complete on his/her HDD.
• Leechers: A user who has a BitTorrent client connected to the P2P Network and who is downloading a file but still has not finished.
• Torrent: The name of the files that BitTorrent uses to make each BT Client connect to the same tracker/group of users that are providing and downloading each file.
About DC++, it USED to be good, about 2 or 3 years ago. And it's another thing. DC++ (for those who don't know, it was based on DirectConnect) is a program that works under a "Hub" hierarchy. You connect to a Hub, each hub has certain rules, users have to share X amount of GBs in order to enter and stay in the Hub, each user has available "Slots" to where other users of the same Hub can connect to download stuff.
Think of it as a mIRC channel where you can access each of the users shares and take what you want.
In my opinion, all bit torrent is is watered down IRC. Its for people who need some nice little progress bar and all they want to do is click a link to download something. IRC is muuchh more powerful.

Another thing, most of the releases by bittorrent are BS, not even real! I just tried downloading an ovbiously fake release (DVD Rip for LOTR ROTK, HAHAH! YEAH RIGHT)
and it had some stupid tracker error, and then yet another I tried, same thing. IRC is much better, it actually has servers, not just people with the files.
The files are real if you have the right sources. E.g. xxxx.org is one of the best, but some irc channels share reliable torrents too.
Myuu.EXE: Why don't you just limit your upload to something like 10KB in BT? I have it like that and all my downloads are coming at full speed.
And btw, dc is still good (i started using it when it first came out), if you just get to some private hubs. Some publics are ok too.

Juno, the fact that you got the .torrent files from not trusty sites doesn't mean that it sucks. I know that I download a lot of things using BitTorrent, and not even ONCE I got a file that was a fake.
IRC has queues, and those are a pain in the little tussssh.
@LoofyGun: I'm from the old school of the DC people too. From hubs that now are just a mere legend. ^^

I found a link to a BitTorrent EXPERIMENTAL download client. In looks like the offical BTC but gives more control and stats. I think bittorrent is awesome. You can find TONS of non-pirate stuff to download. Its a nice way for sites to share things without using their server. I would suggest we start a A-S bittorrent network or something. A way to distribute apps and whatever to each other. I share bittorrents on my home server alot.
There are tons of BT clients, and experimental isnt the best one. I prefer Azureus.
There was a poll about BT clients a while ago.

Aqua-Soft has no objection to talking about BitTorrent, but, when it comes to using BitTorrent for piracy, here's a nice rule of thumb:
Condone piracy - I poke your eyes out
Post links to sites providing pirate software/audio/video/whatever - I break your legs
Attempt to link to your own stuff for people to download illegally, or suggest people PM you for things - you aren't having childrens.
