can anybody help me.

how can i replace the shutdown.exe of windows and use this instead.

what i mean is. if i click the shutdown button in windows startmenu. it will use this instead of the shutdown.exe.

please i love this coz it is very easy to cuztomize

thanks

Sorry to bump this, but yes, you should be able to replace shutdown.exe. Not sure what kind of bad effect this might have, but you can always try it..

Shutdown.exe resides in WindowsSystem32. You can generally replace system files without Windows File Protection kicking in if you boot into safe mode. However, some files (e.g. themeui.dll, etc) cannot be replaced even in safe mode, so you have to boot into safe mode with command prompt and replace the file at the command line.

To replace shutdown.exe with iShut, you need to copy all the files from the iShut folder to the windowssystem32 directory. Rename shutdown.exe to something like shutdown.exe.backup. Then rename ishut.exe to shutdown.exe.

If iShut comes up when you click Shutdown from the Start menu, then you've got a winner. Otherwise, there's not much you can do. But it's worth a shot!

Has anybody tried this yet? I've just gotten my system installed&twaeked to my satisfaction so I don't dare to screw with it now.

LOL, but if what you suggested would work, the next step would be to further the xp-to-osxish-replacement-project by replacing with all the osx-e hosted stuff.

I.e. explorer.exe --> Looca or Nexplorer

System preferences (go figure: I'm using Flyakite's mod pack, and I've allready forgotten the original Windows name...)

--> system X or system preferences

Add some Exposé feats to it with WinPlosion, Entbloess or iEx,

Skinning with left sides callout buttons & rollup functionality through WindowBlinds

Objectbar/Mcbar/Finderbar

Objectdock/OD+/Y'z/Mobydock

Y'zshadow/WindowFX

And you won't need to linger for the real thing because of insufficient funding (although those new Macmini seem very attractive, anyone tried it yet?) or buggy & slow through PearPC, but OS X all the way through your good ol' WindowsXP...

I tried this but Windows won't let you rename the shutdown file. So instead I use one of the tweak programs that allows to remove the shutdown and logoff buttons from the start menu. (I don't remember the name just now but if anyone wants it let me know.) Then I just added iShut to the Start menu (I use the Windows classic view), and presto!

@Ghostwalker--If you're on Windows XP Professional, you can do the following:

Run-->Type "gpedit.msc" without the quotes-->User Configuration-->Administrative Templates--> Start Menu and Taskbar-->Change the settings for the "Remove Logoff" and "Remove and Prevent Access to the Shutdown command".

Perhaps that's a bit extreme, but...*shrug* there you go.

Oh, and at vitasg--did you try renaming shutdown.exe when you were in Safe Mode? It should work then.

No, I didn't do it in Safe mode. I might give that a try, although what I have going now is satisfactory. And safer. But I also just found this link, which removes Windows' ability to prevent renaming of System32 files.

And, no, as far as I know, no iLogoff. Yet ...
