Galaxy Linux Alpha 1 Release (Phoenix Galaxy)

Recommended Posts

Ewww, ubuntu ...

Linux doesn't take that much ram, but still anything above 128mb is really nothing when you run something like Gnome (eww) or KDE ... Your minimum config here is only for console mode. Gnome likes RAM, so does KDE.

I hope you are going to get away a little of ubuntu, if it's just for skinning it, I don't think you will have any future, get your own repos, own release cycle, own everything.

I won't use it, but still : Good Luck !

Oh come on, you're joking, right? Sounds just like Ubuntu Studio. Instead of your Galaxy-thing, it's at least stable. And a new look? Every moron gets that in 10 seconds through art.gnome.org oder gnome-look.org.

If you did a Linux From Scratch, compiled it for modern architectures, created your own packet-management-system, started to develop a new desktop environment, a new Gtk-engine or at least made your own icon- and theme-set, I'd be the last one to complain - but noone needs another distribution, especially not if it's just the 1000th extended slipstream-Ubuntu-version.

Yawn.

LFS is a future thing for me. for now all a 13 year with a hell of a lot of home work can pull off is an ultra modded ubuntu. sorry to disapoint. When i graduate from the 8th grade maybe ill be able to do more to please you guys. Thanks for feed back. and Phantom. Ive changed SOME code. I've only changed what i know i can do. Also ubuntu studio is a waste of a DVD imo... just over a CD-R image size and not much more than this. When i make the LFS version of this when im just a tad bit older and have Time and MONEY that i can actually spend on this then i WILL. but atm i just pulled this off partly for school project and partly cause i was slightly bored with writing my dissertation. Private school SUCKS. Have fun with anything you can do with it and thanks again for comments.

PS: The LFS version of this will be AMAZING... i hope :P obviously more than a week of development and i WILL need help (a not from people who are in LA alxz. i cant really do much without u being here and thats not possible atm.) When i get a car, money, a job, and finish school then i will report here later with my plan for my LFS version. sorry for wasting you time. thanks for the interest. Close the topic if you must.

Well honestly, then, if that is the case, then I suggest take things one step at a time. Learn your way around the Linux environment some more. Learn some more over the course of the next 4 years, until you actually graduate high school. It sounds like this is something you'd really like to be able to do, and great for you. Gather some knowledge about it over the next few years and get a head start on college.

Who knows. After college you yourself could be the leader of the next big Linux distro, considering that is what it seems you like to do.

Anyways, good luck.

thanks for the good will mate. i've got a desktop lying around not doing anything so im ganna try to make my own linux. not sure if i will go far but im ganna print the LFS book at my moms work (they have tons of paper AND a book binder) and then follow that to get a jump on it. Hopefully ill learn some more code along the way to. Anyway, you seemed to know much about the window managers and stuff so do u suggest i used XFCE? ive never liked it that much... GNOME has always been what ive used... KDE is poop, i know that. too windows like any how. but seriously, if i start now, do you think i could succeed or do you think i would just be taking something on stupidly again? obviously, not now, but next year. or even over the summer. i've been using linux since i was 10. i can install from source compile and ISO write .sh scripts, navigate the terminal and some other stuff even older more wise people cant do yet. I hope you guys dont just shun me as too young or arogant or something. thanks again mate.

Where is the download to this? To be honest it sounds like a peiace of crap. Why slipstream linux? Linux is supposed to our alternative from slipstreamed windows.

I've been using linux for over 10 years now and to be honest I didn't think Ubuntu and it's derivatives would never make it in the linux society. But to my suprise it has. It isn't able to compete with Fedora or Mandrak(now Mandrivia) but it's holding it's own. Folks like you taking something that a group worked so hard to bring out is ruining it with your alterations. Say a newb downloads your slipstreamed distro and has a horrible time, they'll be turned off and not come back.

I think you should take this down and work on it a few more months or years then release it. It took Ubuntu 2 years to release. Follow their footsteps and make something good out of it.

Fedora is the best linux in my opinion but for some reason i could never get Java, or sound on my laptop even with PulseAudioServer installed. : / i dealed with it for about a year and then downloaded Ubuntu and had sound which is great because my music collection is huge and i cant work without music. Ubuntu is ugly as hell, and Conical lacks any actual integrity anymore after the deal with dell (almost as bad as SuSE and microsoft in my opinion) but i got sound. i know it sounds shallow and all but ubuntu gave me music back so i stuck to it... This distro wasnt aimed for newbs though mate, on top of that, if you read my above thread i decided to kill it and possibly start on an LFS. thanks for the suggestions though. and it actually isnt that bad. ive gotten it to be stable and all but not the size i wanted.. oh well. thanks again

I will do just that. i just finished downloading Gentoo, a respectable base no doubt? ive only used it once and it was great, even in Live boot.

No reason to be down or pissed at yourself. You just simply aren't ready for something as huge as making your own distro. No where near. You gotta find some way to expand and experiment. How do you think linux freaks such as ourselves got to where we are? We didn't get it overnight, I'll tell you that.

Let this go, and fiddle with Linux some more.

PS: Ubuntu itself isn't ugly, the default theme is. This is Linux, remember. The X window system is very flexible.

Whoa.....stop right there..Keep on the Ubuntu side! lol. Ubuntu has alot of potential. Gentoo has too many derivatives right now. Ubuntu needs something done. Here's a task I've been working on...maybe you can complete it.

Intergrate Beryl upon install. Unless there's already a distro out there like that, but i've yet to find it.

lol, i know i just meant the default theme, i like the looks personally :P a flaw of mine i think! :D all right.. i'll just stick to this "Galaxy Linux" ive got on my laptop and use it for the rest of the year.. now i just need to get my remote to work and install Myth TV sometime :D

sorry just saw the above post, alright, ill stick to Ubuntu for now. maybe even go back down to debian? I REALLY like Beryl. much better than compiz but Beryl stopped development and ive always been taught to stay away from stalled projects. ironic really... anyway. i would have Beryl and i was pleased to see that Beryl was still in the tuxfamily repositories. Makes it much simpler to do these things eh? right now? im uninstalling compiz and installing Beryl infact :P

That actually might be pretty simple, and on the same terms pretty difficult, considering every graphics chipset is different, and every user's Xorg configuration is also different.

Ubuntu already comes with Compiz Fusion built in, what more do you need?

lol, not sure, teach me? or direct me somewhere where i could learn it?

WOAH, nvm i know Xorg, not by that name though :P drivers im a little iffy on but its just finding the right one usually but whenever i enable the drivers for my chipset under Screens and Graphics it always makes the system not boot after GRUB : /

Are you telling me you use Screens and Graphics utility, and have never touched Xorg.conf!?

Looks like you have a ways yet to go, buddy.

And.... how could you know Xorg as a different name?? Xorg is Xorg is Xorg.

Link to comment

I'll be very honest (we don't need to lie to you) :

Don't go for beryl, it's outdated. If you already integrate outdated software, you'll probably end up screwed !

And.... how could you know Xorg as a different name?? Xorg is Xorg is Xorg.

Xf86, Xfree86 ? :) That was in the old times by the way ...

For compiz that doesn't run out of the box, it's up to you to fix it, and not change the program you use. Unfortunately, youo can't do that with the other ones since there are sometimes no alternative.

Also, if you do a Gnome-oriented desktop, don't mix qt apps and gtk apps. I mean don't force us to fill up the ram with QT without even launching something !

But you want to go from Ubuntu (on wich you can't have compiz fusion out of the box) to Gentoo ? Gentoo is not really user friendly for the "lambda user".

"navigate the terminal and some other stuff even older more wise people cant do yet"

Don't want to be mean, but knowing things older wiser peope can't do is not exceptionnal, it's not like they should know terminal since they are older ...

"I hope you guys dont just shun me as too young or arogant or something."

I'm sorry, but you shouldn't have used this as an excuse like you did before. The less people know your age, the better it will be.

And I like KDE. :3

lol, ive messed with xorg.conf . i would have to be a total noob not to... had to mess with it to make Beryl work actually :P i uninstalled that and installed Compiz because as Dream_Team. I HAVE fixed it infact and i fixed quite a while ago. Which apps are Qt. I know you have to load all of the libraries to run them. Qt doesnt show up anywhere when i search for it. I used tracker, find and the nautilus search. I've always stayed away from KDE apps... It's ugly imo when KDE forces the crystal buttons and u have to change them manually. Not exactly apealing to a noobish user. Well, i didnt exactly mean THAT about it :P i meant more along the lines that i know how to use the terminal profitiantly. sorry for that confusion. Sorry, im sticking too GNOME :P KDE is too windows like in my opinion although it does have a certain usability about it, but i've always used GNOME and have tried to use KDE and everytime i end up going back to GNOME. What do you guys think about Enlightenment though? is it crap?

oh, thanks for the feedback you guys! Not what i originally was hoping for but this information helps me a lot :D

Link to comment

I'm not suing you for staying to gnome ! ;)

It's ugly imo when KDE forces the crystal buttons and u have to change them manually.

Yup, some developpers don't care about using KDE icon vars and just include their own ... Some GTK apps don't want to use gnome icons too ... (But heh, QT apps are not obligatory KDE, and GTK are not necessarily GNOME ;) )

About enlightenment, I never has been as stable as GNOME or KDE on my boxes ... Plus it's not very user friendly.

I'm saying that, but apprently GNOME 2.2 coming out today in my distro's repos is gonna be better (Yay webkit in epiphany !) ...

But yeah KDE got rid of good ideas with KDE 4, so I switched to openbox and I'm not really into the KDE vs GNOME subject. But still GNOME is the best for noobs to start, after they can continue using it if they are more advanced users or just change.

One more thing, please don't get releases cycles like ubuntu, they are too long, you should release more often so it even prevents the system to break (If you do every version you will have less chance for files to be dead after a big update, just look at the mess when you try to update suse 9.2 to 10.0) and satisfy the users that want lastest software. The ones who don't want lastest version, well, don't download it, an release is not like an 10.x.y version or a SP, you can skip it ;)

yeah, thats what i was planning on doing. i know how much of a pain it is to download 600 + updates... takes forever and depending on what u wanna do ur system isnt usable for that. in fact, i just updated a ton of files. just noticed that it was saying i had updates XP thanks again :P
