I was unaware that one could preview avi files using xp when in thumbnail mode.

Could you please explain in what fashion the preview is done?

Such as... is the preview located in the "common Tasks" pane, which is typically located on the left of explorer when using an unmodded shell32? Do you need to enable this feature in "folder options?" Right clicking?

Thanks in advance.
