Samurize Popularity

Okay........let's see.....Samurize was the first desktop emulation program that I have become heavily involved in (without designing......SORRY :( ) and now that Avedesk 1.1 is out I kind of have a feeling for what the trend is on Aqua Soft. It looks to me as if now Avedesk is the popular program to play with and therefore Samurize will not be getting a whole lot of attention. Please don't misinterpret me at all - I love both of these applications a lot but I guess I didn't expect the "action" around Samurize to come to such a halt so soon. Maybe I am wrong and people will come back around here in due time...........I hope so b/c as amazing as Avedesk 1.1 is........I enjoyed using Sammy a lot as well. And I am writing this with all due respect to anyone and everyone involved in both Avedesk and Samurize!!! I've learned a lot of new stuff thanks to both of these programs.

It all depends on what you want out of your desktop, really...

I'm no AveDesk expert but that program seems more geared towards prepackaged widgets where you can tweak a few things like colours, images etc. Samurize is about complete customizability - you can put whatever you want whereever you want it etc. but at the cost of ease of use I guess. In fact with the latest Samurize releases you can do almost anything that is possible with AveDesk in Samurize (the few exceptions being user actions; Samurize does not yet have an input SDK but it is in the pipeline).

Also Samurize is primarily a system monitoring tool; but the demands and ideas people have placed on it have malformed it into more of a desktop enhancement engine than a system monitor.

Just my 2c

I'm in agreement with NeM. I use avedesk mainly just for things like ftp drop etc because its simple, prepackaged and gets the job done nicely. But Samuruize is still the king in terms of being completely customizable. There aren't many ways you can't tweak your widgets to suit what you want.

I love both of the programs though :)

IMHO there's no reason why you can't be using both on your desktop.

I'm using Avedesk for widgets that are more suited to that app eg. desktop icons & ftp droplet and I'm using samurize for more or less everything else eg. desktop rotater (wallpaper), media widgets & multimode widgets.

No doubt there is overlap between the two apps but not enough for one to intrude heavily in the other's market.

Bottom line, they're both great apps ;)

hey... something tells me you're a biased promoter of samurize ;)

You might think so, but I think AveDesk is a great app as well (this isn't the first time I've said this) ;) Some people prefer prepackaged widgets, that's great and I completely understand that (I can be lazy at times too :D)

Thanks for some of your feedback guys...........it is helpful to hear what some of you think about my thoughts. Basically all I wanted to get a feel for was if all the sudden the Sammy section of the messageboard was going to die off or something. I just hope that at least some people still are active over here at Sammy b/c as Tadis and Drupy383 both say.......there's no reason why someone can't be using and enjoying both applications. Anyone else have any thoughts or comments on this possibly???

Thanks guys,

Nate Dogg

BTW - I don't think that Nem is trying to be a staunch promoter of one app over the other. It sounds to me like he agrees that they can both be used and utilized in different ways.......?!?!

I agree with Nem, Tadis, and Drupy. I like using both apps and figuring out customizations that, with using both, could save me a lot of resources and memory. There are some widgets I like using in Samurize that AveDesk doesnt' have and vice versa. I see what you mean though. The focus of creating widgets has shifted over to Avedesk but there's no doubt that if these same widgets can be replicated in Samurize, they will be.

i think it's just that the AD update has been so eagerly awaited, that it's just really hot right now (hansel) so there has been a rush to get things going for it. i honestly think that there is no reason not to run both simultaneously since they are both quite powerful in thier own right.

I have never used anything besides Samurize, I find the endless possibilities the most appealing part of Samurize, I think that making something yourself serves much more in the self satisfation department than simply using someone elses stuff. I figure if "you" like something then stick with it, afterall we are really the only ones staring at our desktop.

My opinion, Samurize hands down :D

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just tried out avedesk 1.1 recently and well first impressions are that it seems easy to whip up a widget... what it lacks is the possibilities of the wysiwg editor in samurize...

On the other hand avedesk seems to be less memoryhungry than samurize.. and I don't know if samurize with the latest version have completely fixed the HT problem with P4 processors? That bug made it go down a notch in my list....

the bug was indeed fixed a while ago around version 1.20

(using it on a HT processor)

well i`ll use this thread to ask for things i`ve been asking for some time on samurize forums:

compact widget format - i gave up making configs in Samurize cause it takes me almost more time to pack a config than to make it. it`s the biggest prob i have with samurize.

i also think that AveDesks's iCandy gives it a slight edge over samurize (along with superb resource usage, great widgets and Ave :P)

PS If u haven`t noticed, i`m a sucker for iCandy :P

AveDesk is just better for me :)
