  1. the answer is obvious. of course it'll affect performance. lower resolution = easier on graphics. the question is, what do you lose by changing resolutions? if you're using an lcd, using a non-native resolution will give you blurry images, and using a lower resolution in general will give you less desktop real estate and a huge gui. seriously, though, on modern computers, high resolutions are good. there's no reason to switch to a lower one.
  2. change the font in the vs. you can also change the default system font easily: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=34&t=81368
  3. that should have nothing to do with the uxtheme hack, which is only a change in hex code in the file that allows you to use 3rd party styles. windows udpates may have some updated code for explorer.
  4. that's right. you need to reshack and replace with transparent icons. for firefox, it's easy: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/tips#app_icon
  5. you should be able to use a demo version of nero. plus, the dvdshrink creators explicitly say that other apps can be used: there has to be a way to burn without nero. >< i've never heard of deepburner, but i'm going to check it out too.
  6. dvdshrink is the best: http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html
  7. ^^ i was just about to mention those. the slickdeals forums are especially nice. lots of great deals. dell always has stackable coupons and $750 off laptops, etc.
  8. the easiest way to create visual styles is modifying a pre-existing one. i personally use reshacker for most of my work, resedit when i need to deal with textfiles. stylebuilder is good too, but i don't like it.
  9. thanks, guys. i tried the gnu ghostscript version and it works. it's a really nice app.
  10. try this: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=85776 or: http://virtualplastic.net/html/icn_strt.html#xppanel
  11. here you go: http://wint.virtualplastic.net/showtweak.php?tweak_id=84 if you want, i can send you my dll. i had to massage the code a bit to get it looking right.
  12. that is correct. the welcome screen gives it the "new" xp-style dialog. i like the classic version, hacked with static controls: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=312624
  13. possibly, although this other guy uploaded a test pdf he created and i could copy his. according to his settings (which he listed), he did not allow copying. yeah, i saw that and it looks pretty good, but (for reasons i won't go into here), i need an app. but thanks.
