On a similar note, how does deviantart automaticaly add shadows to their images, and apple add lazer engraving text to their ipod image (attached)

Well there's 2 options;
1) You've got some low grade designers/programmers (commonly referred to as web monkeys -- no offense thefunky_monkey) strapped to their computers just waiting for someone to hit submit and make their images
2) You use an image library such as the ones included in .NET, or GD (for example)

As much as I am a fan of :banging: humans, I've found sites get a better response time when using option #2

You can create shadows using standard CSS. Don't know how though. This site does it:
