sorry, i had to format and i don't have my visual studio cd... so i can't do any more coding at this time. if you want black on green on startup, download "duckie.exe" on the first page. and to make terminal look more authentic, no, there is no way to get it to say C:\.

Hi all,

I have a tip I thought I'd share with everyone regarding an authentic Unix style transparent terminal.

I'd suggest grabbing a copy of "Console" from here: http://sourceforge.n...ojects/console/

And U/Win from here: http://www.research..../sw/tools/uwin/

The combination of those two programs/packages gives one a pretty full featured Unix environment under XP.

U/Win includes a Korn Shell and over 250 utilities such as ls, sed, cp, stty etc.

Also with the addon packages, it has a full blown Unix development environment as well.

The base install package for U/Win is pretty small, about 5 meg. It doesn't tie up alot of system resources either.

Peace,
Grusic

And while you're at it, take a good look at the name/nick of Console icon's author in the readme ;)

That's my friend's app! I think i mentioned it a few posts above :)

I forgot to mention, with the combo of "Console" and U/Win one has access to XP Shell commands *and* Unix shell commands.

So it's really a blend of both!

Peace,
Grusic

Betaguy...can u please update the files.....I would like to have a terminal with a black background and green fonts....the duckie.exe you refer to is an older version of terminal without the bugfixes (such as the mouse disappearing thing) It would be great if you could add a version which is the same as the terminal.exe but with the background color as black and font color as green...

oh and could you make the default terminal font as Lucida Grande???

DOH, again!

the link... the link...

http://sourceforge.n...ojects/console/

Orcinus

Thanks for the link. :D With Iceman's Jaguar VS and a little few edits of the config xml file + cygwin, I got something very close to Terminal on OS X. :)
Check it out:
Terminal in XP

It's nice and fast and that is bash shell 2.x I'm running there. I'll download X-windows later to try out.

Nice job.

Have you happened to check out Cygwin's performance compared to U/Win*?

I'd be very interested in hearing your experience.

Thanks in advance,
Grusic

I have not tried out U/Win*. Is that commercial? I personally only have used & played around with the shell tools and mysql/apache on cygwin. They seem to be fast enough for my needs. Unfortunately, my work place seems to be moving away from *nix tools towards .NET. *SIGH* Don't get me work, I think it is a very interesting technology but I always thought that one of its greatest strengths was interoperability and standards compliance. It seem that execs think that a unified system has to be on one platform using one set of tools rather than having a shared agreed upon standard interface to the data on platforms best suited for each environment. The databackend is the system, not the interfaces. Heh, I'm just a software developer... the hired help. :D I see system admins with many sleepless night battling code red 3 virus on servers on the internet.

aristole: There are commercial, educational and evaluation licenses for U/Win*.

If you'd like to check it out, please goto: http://www.research..../sw/tools/uwin/

Do you have eConsole. This is a small Dos (not Unix) based terminal, but it is verry customizable. You can make transparent background, or picture background, you can have verry narrow margins, or no margins (and no titlebar) can configure the font color, the cursors, etc. The transparent background shows only the desktop background (not icons or other opened windows under the terminal. Check with google and download it. It's pretty free.

If i recall correctly, eConsole (Brandon Sneed's, right?) doesn't support REAL transparent backgrounds... only fake transparency (it only makes your wallpaper show through, not everything on your desktop, windows behind it etc.)

Well, to be honest, Console doesn't support real transparency either... just the usual win2000/xp whole window transparency (including titlebar and all)
What it DOES have (and eConsole doesn't) is a set of cool cursors, though :)

Orcinus

Edit: OK, i'm an idiot and don't read other people's posts thouroughly...
Sorry for that, Xanthrax...
