There is a "non-registed" version for free, you are not REQUIRED to pay but you won't get extra features.

Invision board operate a full, unlimited demo, which allows full use of the software with no restrictions other than that you must leave the invision board copyright notice at the bottom. There are no extra features in the paid version, apart from the support you can get from invision staff (which you dont need).

Not really... Invision has surpassed vB 2.x now... only vB 3 (which is still in beta and rather buggy) matches it. Plus vB don't operate a demo scheme of any kind, oh, and from personal experience, the staff there are asses.

Note: Invisionboard 2 beta 1 should be out near the end of the month, so they say... Lots of new features etc :)

Cheers,

Driving, or walking for the wheelless folk, around with a laptop and a wireless internet card, finding open wireless networks if memory serves me right. Sometimes, you can have teams to see who can get the most.

But, how does this pertain to the topic?

Allow me to be a hypocrite:

You should also look at PHPBB, Its completely OPEN SOURCE, which is better than free. The new version which is in beta (but stable) completely matches IPB. And the stable version is pretty good as well.

I feel the best one is invision board. I did a comparison of all the 3 major boards a while ago here.

Seems to me that we have ignored openbb in this... Perfectly good forum software.. Its fast and reliable and not too harsh on the eyes :) Don't know if its in IPB's league, but hey...

Cheers,

For customization, I feel that vB is really simple. I was only using vB for literally 2 minutes before I knew how to customize the look of your forums. phpBB is not that customizable unless you really get your hands dirty. And right now I am having problems with customizing IPB. But, IPB is indeed a nice piece of software.

lol... don't you think Wizard that if it's soooo easy to customize (Vb) it's because it's coded like... a pig???? well it is, the functions are everywhere in the files, it's the same base of code since Vb2.x!!!!! Vb is a very good forum manager but... soooo hungry !!!! if you customize it a bit you rapidely grow to 25 or more queries!! and it's worth on Vb3 :( What decide is the price of Vb.... wouarf...

IPB has been designed to be better organized in the files AND in the db, the templates customization is a "mr. hankey" but very powerfull when you have differents styles... i take an example of the DB difference:
vb => 47 tables, 1,7Mb for the templates (2 templates set i made + the original)
total=>170Mb BW/month: 7go

i ported the stuff under IPB cause i couldn't get my license updated
ipb => 37 tables, 900kb for relatively the same templates
total => 130Mb BW/month: 5go with about the same pages view per month

Waow... not the same... even if i made a lighter style under IPB, the diference is significant!!

I tried PhpBB but... i'm not conviced, Vb, PhpBB and WBB are all jurasic... :P

IPB rox for most of the use that people need :) Vb is good but not very cheap!! :(

Well, I just need to figure out how it's processing the pages. The only thing I have figured out so far is to get rid of the "(Powered by Invision Power Board)" tag. I have yet to compare the bandwidth. I am not that far yet.
