Easy question, can I run it smoothly with 1 Gb of RAM and an Intel Core Duo Processor?

Depends what you mean smoothly, 1Gb is the minimum requirement for Ultimate.

sounds very iffy to me. why are you getting ultimate?
when i ran vista on a laptop with (i think) 2 GB RAM vista was a nightmare, but that was before service packs & only on one processor.

LOL
My girlfriend's laptop has 2 GB & uses Windows Vista Ultimate & it work kinda sluggish, so, in my opinion, you will need at least 3-4 GB of RAM to run Ultimate, "smoothly".
