Hi all
I am looking to become a designer for websites and graphic designs too. i am not sure whats the best programs to use but i would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. both with programs needed and how the work flow normally goes. i am looking to do this professionally and need to know as much as possible about the whole thing, basically how to get to the point where i can now create good designs.

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Illustrator CS4 for graphics. For coding I use Coda. I am working on a Mac so all apps are Mac versions.
In webdesign, you should know about HTML, CSS and maybe JavaScript and JavaScript libraries like jQuery and scriptaculous.

Web development is a broad term for any activity to developing a web site for the World Wide Web or an internet. This can include e-commerce business development, web design, web content development, client-side/server-side scripting, and web server configuration. However, among web professionals, "web development" usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services.

You need to play around with the tool that you have so that you can get familiar with it. Try designing something simple for a dummy site.

In fact, those are all sharewares, and good ones ($$$). Here are some open-source alternatives I use everyday.
Photoshop CSx replacement (for bitmap graphics)
Gimp :
www.gimp.org
Illustrator remplacement (for vector graphics)
Inkscape :
www.inkscape.org
For coding, you can use Kompozer, which is a great WYSIWYG editor to start with.

But there is actually no open-soucrce soft as powerful as Dreamweaver, but it's still doing the job.
Good luck!
