It all depends on your needs. They're both good choices. Wordpress is more of a blogging platform, while Joomla is a full fledged CMS. They can both be customized and be seo friendly.

If you require CMS features, I'd go with Joomla. It has a longer learning curve than Wordpress, but once you figure it out you can do anything with it.

If you are looking for multiple users submitting articles, I would recommend you use Joomla, coz it provides better user management. You could get going with such a site in minutes. I have experience with doing the same on Word press and Joomla. Both are equally good, but takes lesser effort in Joomla. Also taking into consideration 1.6 is around the corner, I would say stick to Joomla for now and update it once at least theres a beta release.

No, I don't think Joomla is better than wordpres. Is by your design of request. Wordpress is simple and support a lot of plugin, but the site structure is still like a blog. If you want to use high standard website with a lot of complex function, you have to choose Joomla. My personal like wordpress because is easy to use, and I don't need too much functions to make my website as a platform. For mid level website design, wordpress is quite enough to use. if you want to use joomla to design a simple website, you will feel headache with joomla backstage function and always lost in the complex instructions.

Joomla is the best for site making because it is very easy to use and joomla templates are recommended by many SEO experts because they that Search Engines crawl this easily.

According to my opinion wordpress is better than Joomla. Some reasons to that:

1) Easy to install
2) Easy to use
3) Customization
4) Theming
5) All in One SEO
