Here is the new XWindows Dock 5.4:

you should install new version to a new folder, but you can try to copy DockItems.xml.
skins have a new format, so all previous skins must be re-generated (they're NOT compatible!)
run XWD with default skin, then look into .SkinsCurrent folder for examples of new PNGs that are needed.
docklets have a new API, so all previous docklets developers will have to migrate them before they can be used again.

Features
  • Two types: 2D and 3D.
  • Supports many languages. Not yours? Add it via an XML file!
  • Skin-able. You can also create your own skins (and even borrow images from other skins)! *Improved!*
  • Can be started with windows.
  • Size of icons: 32x32 to 100x100 pixels
  • Configurable zoom of icons when mouse hovers over them: 32x32 to 100x100 pixels. *Improved!*
  • Configurable number of zoomed icons. *New!*
  • Has built in stacks. Four modes are available: fan, grid, list and it's unique gallery mode! *New&Improved!*
  • Selectable animation for stacks. *New!*
  • Configurable number of icons in fan stacks: 4 to 30.
  • Configurable number of icons in grid stacks: 1 to 200.
  • Configurable spacing between icons and their reflections: -5 to +5 pixels.
  • Configurable spacing between icon and bottom of dock. *New!*
  • Configurable opacity and blur of reflections. *New&Improved!*
  • Configurable panel opacity: 0 to 100%
  • Configurable panel hiding time: 0 to 3600 seconds *New!*
  • Configurable space between panel and screen border: 0 to 100 pixels
  • Configurable space between icons: 0 to 10 pixels.
  • Shows indicators of running applications.
  • Option to hide stacks when losing focus.
  • Option to minimize windows into dock. Supports 2 effects: Default and Genie. Configurable minimization speed. *Improved!*
  • Folder monitoring. Configurable for reacting to events such as: Added, Removed, Modified and Renamed files.
  • Option to remain always on top.
  • Configurable size of icons in stacks: 24 to 150 pixels.
  • Option to show icon shadow, and to define opacity and blur of the shadow. *New&Improved!*
  • Option to show dock on mouseover.
  • Two options for what to do when an icon is dragged out of the dock: create shortcut or removal.

And many more!

New stack type: Gallery, where you can look trough your pictures, videos and other files. You can also play a video or install your picture as wallpaper. To change position of playing video just type either the right or left arrow key. To activate item of gallery click either the left or right mouse button.

What's the purpose of Mask*.png files in a skin?

They're used for determining how to show windows reflection on the panel. If you don't want that the dock shows relfection on some places of your skin panel, you should use 100% transparency.

You can also create reflection gradients. For that you should create gradients from white to black or from black to white ;). Black is used to instruct the dock where reflection should be painted, while white is where it shouldn't.

For a better understanding of it, you should unpack some skins from .Skins and look at what its mask*.png files look like and then see the resulting effect when running the dock.

If you wish to say thanks, please do it here.

Hi everyone,

I want to inform you about the status of my Docklets, concerning the fantastic update to XWD Version 5.4. ;)

* No Docklet for 5.2.3 does work under 5.4. Don't try it. (Hehe, now you will try it, won't you?)

* There have been a lot of changes in the underlying API, so it will take a while, till i have updated all these Docklets.
Also I don't just want to update them, but take the chance to build in some minor improvements & suggestions. So please be patient. The Docklets will probably be updated in ~ this order: XHarddrive, XMail, XCal, XDesktoplet, XGrab, XCmd, XBattery, XVol. They will be published in the new Docklets for v5.4 - Thread (replaces the old sticky? Panta?). I can't give you a timeline, sorry.

* I decided to publish the sources, when ever it's possible, to help other developers create new Docklets, and to help other people help me to improve my Docklets (your patches are very welcome!). I will included the source directly into the usual downloads, they are only some kb big and I save time, when I don't have to pack them seperatly. In the Docklet-Thread you will see, which files are essential, so you can delete the others, if you urgently need some more kb free space on your drive :P.

* I try to get away from the Mac-Dock like look for my docklets, for two reasons: First, I'm not sure about the legacy of the Mac-Icons I used before, and second I will support Bobahs efforts to clearly seperate from Mac-Dock. However, there will always be enough options for customization... ;)
Cheers, Atreiu.

I miss that option too, Nikola, but not every suggestion and improvement can be done in one Update ;) So let's be happy about the things that already have been improved.

BTW: We all should think about donating to Bobah, for his efforts!
(Where are your donating-infos gone, Bobah?)

5.3 skins aren't compatible, sorry dude. You can try porting some from 5.3 to 5.4 using matonga's skin editor, but be prepared to make grid edges and masks for new ones.

Hi,

I have converted all 135 skins of the version 5.2.3 for the new version 5.4; it has been a hard job; I hope that BOBAH13 doesn't add new changes of compatibility to the skins in the next versions

here for download:
http://www.aqua-soft...ead.php?t=51164

NOTE: I am not the author of the skins, I have converted only their, I apologize me with the authors if they were in disagreement with this job.

@freestart: I know you did it with the best intentions in mind but, as the new version has new graphic elements, I don't think it's a good idea publishing your personal conversions, as the authors may have different ideas about how they should look. Let them do their job for publishing... ;)

Man, if you think twice, you should know it is NOT a bad idea.

As you said:

Let them do their job

So if those authors have new ideas, WE are the ones who must choose the best skin.
Those new ideas might be an update for THIS skin repack!!!

@Mattey: As far as I know, he has no permission for reworking and republishing them; obviously he can rework them for his own use.

Sooner or later we're going to have problems for publishing unauthorized skins and icons! (as I've already been warned by a friend...)

Make some rules for this problem.
Something like: Do not post anything you "modified" if you have not changed/edited all the skin elements (more or less the masks) or you have permission to use it (which you should get on a public internet space be it a forum, dA or other sites/blogs comment) from the author himself. Anyone who doesn't respect this rule should be warned/banned/denounced.

No additional rules needed here, everything is already in the Board Policies:

Quote

4.3. Action: Pirated software, pornography of any kind or copyrighted content will NOT be allowed.
Result: Post will be deleted or have the offending content removed.

That says everything.

BTW: It's not clear, if the themes he posted are copyrighted or not, or if he has permission or not. So it's totally up to him. It's on his responsibility, anyway. I run a board for my own, so I know the legal impact: Everything someone posts is on the posters responsibility ONLY. The owners of the Board are not obligated to check everything for copyright, but they are obligated to delete obviously illegal content or as illegal reported content within 24hours. (this is the law in Germany)

PS: The Board Policies are strange in this case: they should say:

Quote

4.3. Action: Pirated software, pornography of any kind or illegal posting of copyrighted content will NOT be allowed.
Result: Post will be deleted or have the offending content removed.

Because everything the people post on this Forum is automatically copyrighted to them, f.e. shishimaru has automatically the copyright of his great designs, until he decided to stand back from his copyright by using a GPL or something. But there is nothing wrong, if a copyright holder (Bobah or shisimaru) decide to post their material here.

PPS: If further discussion is needed, i propose to use another thread, because this is getting off topic.

A good point for you. I didn't wanted to talk about this subject but it was in my mind. You are totally true. I see a lot of WILD ports here (BUT i'm not talking about xwd 5.2.3 skins to 5.2.4).
