Among Windows 7's features, the taskbar overhaul is probably the feature in Microsoft's upcoming OS that has aroused the most interest.

So you've seen all those videos of the new Windows 7 Beta taskbar and you can't help but wish that the new "Superbar" was also available for Vista and XP?

Well, you won't have to wait for Windows 7 anymore... Winstep Xtreme 8.11 has just been released, and brings with it the most interesting features of the new Windows 7 taskbar - into the XP and Vista world!

I gave up on these guys and the whole Winstep project years ago. They promised a working NextStep like dock that never saw the light of day. I paid for their software and was never happy about it. I felt ripped off. I waited a very long time for said dock. I would stay away from them, they have a habit of breaking promises.

Donald, sorry you feel that way... I guess it's impossible to satisfy everyone, but it is a feat to hold a grudge for so long (you registered NextSTART 8 years ago!).

Anyway, in case you haven't noticed, there is a dock in Winstep Xtreme. So I do keep my promises - just not exactly when YOU want it.

A word of advice which I feel is just common sense anyway: when you purchase software, do so for what it does now, not for what it might do later. Developers are under no obligation to do things the way you think they should. This way nobody ends up disapointed or feeling ripped off.

Thanks. What do you mean switch shells? WSX is a shell enhancer, not a shell replacement. It works on top of any shell, although it was designed specifically to work on top of Explorer. :)

Getting back to 'normal' Windows is a simple question of exiting Winstep Xtreme, for instance.

I don't see how the taskbar can enhance explorer's without replacing it ;)

It IS, however, very well done, and makes switching windows a breeze - if I ever really used the taskbar, I'd consider buying it :P

(I don't use explorer, it's a samurize config, not that I ever really touch it anyway)

It simply hides the real Explorer taskbar and replaces it with its own version, which is a lot more powerful.

However, Winstep Xtreme is so flexible that, if you want, you can actually have BOTH the Explorer taskbar and Winstep Xtreme's version of it running side by side. :)

I don't see how that's useful, though :P

In any case, it's a yummy shell replacementenhancerator, so you should be sad I love my current setup :P

Oh, just to prove a point. I wouldn't run it like that either, but maybe someone else might find that useful, especially since the tasklist can also be detached from the Startbar and left floating anywhere on the screen.

If people have docks displaying running tasks together with the Windows taskbar, why not do the same with a floating Winstep Xtreme tasklist?
