DesktopEffects for XP

Furthermore, DesktopEffects can be extended by extra Effects, which are simple COM objects.
Requirements
+ Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Update http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en
+ DirectX9 November Update http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en
Note
Windows XP support, while tested thorougly is still being worked upon: this means that it is possible that the desktop might be rendered wrongly. A simple, but descriptive bug-report will help resolve those issues.

I installed it (Windows XP SP 2) but have no 'Configure Desktop Effects' item in my desktop contextual menu.

Also I notice I still have a 'Configure Extra Desktops', even though I uninstalled it time ago. Any registry key I have to manually remove for this one?

Do you have the required libraries installed?

Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Runtime Files ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en )
DirectX 9.0c November 2007 Runtime ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en )

Configure Extra Desktops -> regsvr32 /u MultiDesktop.dll manually otherwise - the installer I'm using is a bit, well, sucky.

Hi Andreas, is this version still a beta? Or will you be expiring your apps (ie: February 14, 2008) as a matter of procedure now?

On the hand one it is to force people to update once in a while, on the other it is because I'm in negotiation with some companies about this application.

I reinstalled DX9.0c November.I thought I had already installed it :P.

It works just right and smooth except for video wallpaper, it caused an error (didn't mind to write it down... d'oh!) and then it killed explorer. When explorer started again, I right-clicked the desktop and explorer died. This happened a couple of times again up to when instead of right-clicking desktop I decided to uninstall your app, then right-clicking worked (but of course no more Configure Desktop Effects option as I had deinstalled it).

I'll install your app again and try to determine why died with video (maybe missing codec, as I use VLC to play video).

MultiDesktop:

Unregistering the .dll did the trick, thanks! However it doesn't allow me to delete the file (???). I will try upon next reboot.

Edit:

Ok, I reinstalled DesktopFX and it kills explorer with this:

(caption) Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
(icon) white exclamation sign over red octagon
(text)
Runtime Error!

Program: C:WINDOWSexplorer.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
(/text)

Edit:

Ok, I deleted HKCUSoftwareAveSoftwareDesktopEffectsVideo(something), now it doesn't hang. I will test video again.

Edit:

Ok, this time I tried with an .mpg and it works like a charm. It may be a codec problem so (the one having problems is a .avi).

Thank you for this great program. Using it on XP SP3.

Notes: The underwater option doesn't seem to do anything on my pc. Every other function works. Also, uses 100% cpu for snowflakes and mouse trail effects. Is it supposed to do that?

Anyway, best of luck with it. I think you're on to something...!
