I think you're going to have to reshack sndvol32 in order to achieve this.

Icon Groups 303 & 304

steps:
1 - get resource hacker (reshack) here http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/
2 - open sndvol32.exe found in (your windows directory)/system32/sndvol32.exe or probably c:WindowsSystem32sndvol32.exe
3 - click action>replace icon...
4 - click the [open file with new icon...] button
5 - choose the new icon you want then click open
6 - select the icon to replace at the right part (303 for muted 304 for normal)
7 - click the [replace] button
8 - repeat steps 4-7 for the other icon
9 - there is no step 9

kinda complicated but you should do it easily

[EDIT]
If this dosen't work try opening (your windows directory)system32Stobject.dll
instead and replace icon 230(normal) and 231(muted) instead

Does anybody know how to do that in vista, i.e. which specific icons need to be replaced to get a different sound icon sitting in my taskbar?
Also, I am trying to find out which icons are responsible for systemtray network activity indicator: they're somewhere in netshell.dll, but which ones are they exactly (there are tons of icons there).
i'll appreciate your help.
