Go to dell.com and in the upper right corner drop box select "Articles & Solutions".
Type your problem & you'll most likely find your solution there. Also, they have a means of narrowing things down based on the computer model. There is no quick, easy solution but, most of the time I've found my solution there.

Get your drivers; then in Device Manager, right-click > "Update Driver".
If your drivers are extracted then browse to where they are where Windows is going to search for them.
If it is a single .exe, then you should be able to install it through that .exe file. If its a zip, extract it to 'C:' When windows asks if you want to search a specific location, check that box and browse to your C: folder.
If it is an .exe, and you still can't install the sound controller, then you need to extract the .exe manually. I can tell you how to do that later. When that gets extracted, then follow the exact steps mentioned above.
Will post back later when I get home.

Hi,
My name is Todd and I'm with Dell's online outreach program. If you go to our support site, http://support.Dell.com, there is a link in the upper left for Warranty Information. If you type in your service tag (found on a sticker attached to the system) it will give you the status of the warranty of the system.
One of the tabs of that page is for Original System Configuration and if you click that it will list the original components that system was built with. Assuming you haven't changed out the sound card of the system it will take you the make and model of the sound for your system.
What model of system do you have? Do you know if it's using integrated sound by any chance? If so, you may need to install the chipset and Dell notebook system software to get the sound to work correctly.
Let me know if this helps or if you have any further questions. I'll stop back to see if there is anything else I can do to help.
Thank you,
Customer Advocate

Go to http://support.dell.com. Click Drivers and Downloads. Select your computer model or enter the service tag found on the dell. Select your OS from the option menus. Press the + near Audio to expand it. Download the Driver (if there are 2 try both) It will install it over your old driver. After you restart computer it should work. Hope that helps
