I recommend to start learning UML or DFD (Data Flow Diagrams) if you are new to programming.
And of course the basics on Data Structures and Algorithms.

If you want to start with MS stuff there's a free learning program available in latin-america called five star developer. If you speak spanish it might be well a good starting point:

I'll revive this one a bit and throw a curve ball at you: what would I want to learn if I want to be able to program for both Mac and PC, apart from Java? I've been dabbling in programming but I suck at it so I want to learn seriously, so might as well learn something I can use on all my computers!

I started out with Visual Basic 6, I suggest downloading a copy of Microsoft Visual Basic Express 2008 or 2010 Express Beta.
