Its very confusing and im still trying to figure everything out so please correct me if im wrong here. Intel announced intel core 2 duo processors, the second version of the intel core brand (the name replaces the pentinum brand) which supports two processors and will be 64bit compatable unlike the original core duo's. There will be intel core 2 duo conroe for desktops and intel core 2 duo memron for laptops, these cpu's will power the 2nd generation of intel-mac products. Woodcrest which replaces xeon's and could possibly be used in future intel powermacs. It has been said that apple is releasing macbook pro's and imac's with this new cpu and will be released sometime after august.

It is also rumored that intel is planning on releasing intel core 2 solo cpu's with one processor instead of two. Also another rumor is that the cpu in todays duo core imac's can be replaceable and upgradable with the new core 2 duo processors since it isnt sodered into the motherboard itself.

Heres the release dates i got off macrumors.com

MacBook with Core Solo/Duo - Very soon
Mac Pro with Dual Core 2 Duo chips - August
MacBook Pro with Core 2 Duo chips - September
iMac with Core 2 Duo chips - October

With this said i cant wait for apple to release their very own 64bit OSX system but we wont know until WWDC.

you can indeed upgrade your iMac's cpu. it's been officially confirmed by apple and stated on their support site i think.

the macbook has already been released with core DUO not solo chips

the mac pro might come with dual core two duo chips... gosh i hate that name >_< [quad sounds cooler... so did g5]

hmm... i bought a macbook pro with the "intel core duo" 2ghz model... does this mean that in a years time (or whenever the new "core duo version 2" comes out) I'll be able to replace my CPU?

I originally bought my macbook knowing that in a couple of years time i could add another stick of ram in to updgrade...

Will the logicboard of my macbook be able to support the new speeds of the "core duo 2" ?
WIll the logicboard of my macbook bet 64-bit compatible?
Is the current core duo soldered in on the macbook?
what speeds are expected/rumoured on the "core duo" processors? 3ghz?

The MacBook Pro processors are soldered into the motherboard, so no you won't be able to upgrade the CPU like on an iMac or Mac Mini.

no sorry igo but they arent.

Ill just copy and paste some info i found online for you mate.

In order of increasing speed:

1. 32-bit app, 32-bit OS, 32-bit chip (today, Yonah)
2. 32-bit app/OS, 64-bit chip (June Woodcrest, August Merom - Merom in 32-bit 25% faster than Yonah)
3. 32-bit app, 64-bit OS/chip (XP in June/August, wait for WWDC for news about true 64-bit OSx64)
4. 64-bit app/OS/chip (the future, but few apps today for Windows, none for OSx64)

The problem for the current Yonah MacIntels, is that #1 is the only option. Stuck at 32-bit only.

Memron chips sound will be able to run both 32 and 64bit apps, and memron should run it alittle faster then yonah chips which modern intelmac's use. A memron at 2.16ghz should be alittle then Yonah at 2.16ghz when running on a 32bit OS like Tiger. But when memrons running on a 64bit OS the speed difference should be 10-15% better then Yonah's, another advantage of Memron is that it have cpu's with faster clockspeeds and SSE4 which will improve coding for multimedia.

Another thing, the new Powermac's will probably have dual woodcrests, i dont know if they will use the core 2 duo brand though, itll probably be announced in WWDC in august 7th.

Well. yeh.... I did some research on current Core processors. It's true that they aren't 64Bit.

That's kinda sad, cause I thought since Pentium D and Pentium D EE are both 64BIT (EMT64), it's only logical that next gen of processor would follow the line. Turns out I was wrong.. :)

it is more faster or else there wouldnt be any reason for intel to release these new cpu's.

im hoping for it actually, that way we can finally get to use a 64bit OS in a 64bit mac, i wonder how much faster everything will run. if you already have a imac with core duo cpu in it you can upgrade it to core 2 duo like you upgrade parts on a pc.

As I was waiting to see the new fast and the furious 3 Tokoyo drift last night, I stopped by to check out all of the new hardware that apple released, the iMac, Macbook pro and the Mini, and don't know if the old iMac G5 can do the ripple affect but all of the new intel Mac Mini, MacBook Pro and the iMac all has the ripple affect, I was believe that a mini has the ripple affect, I didn't know that the mini or the macbook pro can support core image. Is it because it supports 64-bit technology or i'm I missing something? I'm waiting for the Intel powermac before I make my final decision on which Apple Intel computers to buy.

respect? well its just hardware i mean treat it well i guess and try not to break or damage anything, i dont think pc users treat their systems without respect either, atleast i did.

yeh... I'd agree with ShadyApple. I also treat my PC with equal respect as I treat my iBook with. Afterall it's a pretty cool system I have built, and specially with kinda money I spent on it.. it does deserve a respect.. ;)
