I registered to share my experience as well.

My ipod did the same thing as others here have posted. Well taken care of, it just stopped putting out sound one day for no reason I could see. I read this forum, and did the "pinch test." Yes, I could hear some music. Did the ice pack test and yes, it worked fine for nearly 15 minutes. Long enough to play from "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" by Al Green (great f*$@king song to "Airbag" by Radiohead. Then it looks normal, but no sound.

I'm gonna give Apple a call. I'll post my results. Wish me luck.

Mark me down as a new registrant to share my story.

My black 5th gen video ipod has always worked GREAT. I've had it for a few years now. I was in the car, and it just stopped playing mid-song. I tried rebooting it, updating it, restoring it...everything. Finally I found this thread through a Google search. After reading milkjug's post, I tried the pressure spot, and I could get some faint scratchy music through my headphones.

So, this morning I called the apple support number (1-800-275-2273) and pressed 0 a few times. An operator answered, and I asked for a product specialist. I was given Scott, who I explained the problem to. He looked up my serial number, told me my warranty was well-expired, and that I could pay for it to be repaired or go to my local store. When I told him I wanted to speak to a "product specialist" or a supervisor, he said they would tell me the same thing because the warranty was up. He was NOT very pleased with me either. I told him I understood, but I would still like to speak with a "product specialist" (apparently, the magic words).

After holding for awhile (5-10 minutes), Scott put me through to Spencer. Spencer told me this was an issue they had been dealing with, and that they would make an "exception" to the warranty policy and treat it as if still under warranty. They are sending me a FedEx box which would arrive in a day or two, I was to put my ipod in it, and send it back (free shipping). They will look at it to make sure there is no physical or water damage, and if not, send me a brand new replacement FREE of charge. He said it would ship to me in 3-5 days. All together, this process should only take a little over a week. He also apologized on behalf of Scott, and said he was "new" and didn't know about this 5th gen ipod issue.

I was VERY pleased with Spencer. THANK YOU ALL FOR POSTING, YOU SAVED ME A COUPLE HUNDRED BUCKS! I will post again with a follow-up, hopefully when I have a brand new ipod!

I came here to say that this works!

I have the u2 30gb ipod and have had it since like 2005.. I use it everyday for hours etc etc we are attached at the hip. So about a month ago it quit outputting sound. It took me until last night to get to the apple store (I live about 100miles away) and they tried to tell me it was the hard drive and they could send it in for $150 or to buy a new one. She said she tried to restore it (I hadn't got around to this yet) and that it wouldnt stay connected long enough to restore.
I took it home and tried to restore and it worked 1st try! So since I figured I was being lied to anyway I decided to do some research and ended up here.
I called Apple this morning and the gentleman (sorry I am terrible with names) was great! I explained what happened and that I went to the store last night and what she tried to tell me and it wasn't true.. He said it is indeed a manufactures defect and they are fixing them for free. He said he'd put it right thru and that he needed to contact his superiors "product specialist"
and it would take about 10 mins on hold for authorization and he would get everything worked out for me.

I was transferred to the product specialist and she wanted to know what was going on..she said I should qualify and gave me the shipping info for UPS.. That I should get a fixed ipod back within a week if it is the logic board..no cost to me!

This is my 1st and only ipod and I am so thankful to you guys for discussing this and finding an real and economical solution! This kind of support from apple makes me happy that I chose their product over the competition. Also it is great you can speak to an American and not some Indian you can't understand!

Thank you :D :D

Got my new ipod. Looks BRAND NEW. Not a scuff or scratch on it. Works GREAT. Took about a week from my call until I got the new one. And it was FREE!

Registered to share my experience as well, and holy chit, does it work.

I'm one of those people that will never ask for a supervisor as I don't want to sound rude, nor am I someone that tries to get everything for free, even if I break it. I just feel too bad when I do that. Anyway, I called tonight and talked to Andrian (awesome guy) which gave me the usual by-the-book stuff. After hearing him say that I would need to take it to an Apple repair store and fork over $129.99, I asked for a supervisor. Also said that this was my first time going through this whole process as I was always too chicken to ask for a super. Anyway, I talked to Kathy (awesome woman) and after going through the usual stuff again, I told her that this is a problem and Apple must look into it. She checked her records and did not find any material on it. I told her that I would send it to her and she (technical services actually) could take a look at it anyway as I treat my Ipod with the utmost respect. Long store short, I'm suppose to be getting a FedEx box in the mail soon.

W00t. I've always been a PC guy, but this experience with Apple has really impacted me. I will remember this and will base future purchases off of it.

I had to add my story today March 26, 2010.

I have the same problem as the users in this forum post. My ipod is 5th generation 30GB Classic. The ipod looks like it plays music, but no sound will come out of the headphone jack or usb connector. When you press hard on the bottom right corner during music playback you could make it work.

I called apple and told a representative about this problem. I was told it would be $130 to repair. I persisted that others on this forum had the same issue and he connected me with a manager. In less than five minutes with the manager I had my ipod ready and paid for by the UPS store to send back to apple.

Thank you very much to the posters on this forum for your help on this issue! If others have this problem I would encourage you to call Apple. Thank you Apple for excellent customer service!

I registered just to tell my story.

Thank you for this thread! It's been great.

I had the exact same problem with the soundless playing 5th generation 30gb white ipod, and I called the apple number (1-800-275-2273) from Romania using skype. I was talking to the first rep in less then 2 minutes. After telling me I am way out of warrantee, he listened to my problem, and the first thing he told me to do was to press the lower right corner of the ipod as hard as I could and see if it starts playing. It did, obviously, so without further insistence he told me he would explain the situation to his supervisors and they would make sure i can send it in and have it fixed or replaced for free, as it is a problem they at apple are aware of. No begging, a** kissing, nothing. Ryan, a really nice senior advisor took over and it's all taken care of. I just have to ship my Ipod from Romania to some relative or friend in the US, and they need to do the shipping back and forth to Apple - free of charge, of course. All done in 32 minutes, from the first call.

Thanx!

Restore your ipod using itunes .Then add again all your music, or hold the center circle button plus the play/pause button at the same time for 5 seconds and restart it and see if that works. It worked for me.
