I have been trying to find a list of the real dock features but I can't find a good list, so can someone post the features the real dock has. I'd like to compare the real features with the features the Y'z Dock and Mobydock already has and what they don't so I can make a table of it for my website.

I've found a semi good list of the features so I will be asking questions about the mobydock and maybe the Y'z Dock so I can rate and check off if they emulate certain features. My first question is can you resize mobydock?(my mobydock is screwed up and I can't find a download for it that is up.)

Characteristics of the Dock are:

Resizable
customizable in size of magnification
capable of adding any shortcut and it will display its real icon(not pngs involved)
Display a program status (progess of a task)
Show how are you printing, by showing in the dock a printer icon with the page number it is working on
Playing quicktime movies as a thumbnail in the dock
Control programs like itunes from the dock
Interactive icons that change when the application is running/minimized (Calculator, iCal)
With animations
Trash can on it
No jagged edges, smooth scrolling and animation

There must be more, but those are the ones i can name right now

I only know of two and Yzdock already has both ones: it is the ability to turn magnification off and to tile on left right and bottom of the screen.

recently a program was launched, which allows the user to skin the dock. It is not of apple, it is from other persons who are in the icons bussiness. http://iheartny.com/xicons

Well here is the list of Dock Features. It is actually in a table I am making but html doesn't seem to show up in here

OSX Dock Features Y'z Dock Rating MobyDock Rating
Different Locations Yes 5/5 No --
Resize Yes 5/5 No --
Magnification Yes 4/5 Yes 3/5
Genie/Scale Effect No -- No --
Active Icons No -- No --
Adding/Removing Items Yes 5/5 Yes ?
Auto-Icons No -- No --
Program Status No -- No --
triangle indicator No -- No --
QT Thumbnail Movies No -- No --
Skinnable Yes 3/5 No --
Sub Icon Menus No -- No --
New Features No -- No --

I still have a long ways to go on it and most of it is probably inaccurate and later on I will put this on my site with star icons for ratings and checks and Xs images for what they have and don't have. Also I will make the features links so that you can get more info about what the feature does.

Hi everyone, Great to see such a web site like this. I have actually spent my entire day going through all the links etc. I just recently decided to turn my PC into mac style. I started out with the 128 X 128 icons on the desktop but that gets really old after ahwile. I then tried Desktop X and got reeally pissed that it took all that cpu space(i am a cpu anal retentive) and I moved on from that back to the large icons. I actually made my theme all mac OS X for a Lan party that i help run, and just to have a different looking pc then everyone else. Someone came in with a modded g4 case with pc parts in it, BASTARD!, I wish i coul dget my hand son one of those cases. Lucky :) Great Lan box. Ok so ramble this ramble that, needless to say I reallllllly Like the Yz App, it is the smoothest least cpu usage program like this that looks smooth and nice. It is simple to use which is also important, becaus eif your gonan go for the mac look(me being an OLD mac junkie, never again) it should be easy like the mac. I only hope that there are only improvements from here. maybe the ability to run two docks at the same time? I can; twait till teh clock is released like the Moby has. Moby is just too complicated and unstable for my liking, although the designer did an excellent job on it non the less just not my cup of tea. I would also like to see the icons move in the Yz more like those of the moby dock... ok thats all for now see ya all later.

This is a good list, but it doesn't just show "thumbnails" of quicktime movies in there. Any window you minimize turns into a thumbnail. Linux has had a feature like this in some of it's window managers for a while now it's called iconifiying a window. Heck.. AmigaOS had iconifying but it didn't snapshot the minimized window it just put it as an icon on the desktop.

This is a feature that either free docks have yet to emulate. If either of them implements it then I am going with the one that does. This is also where the genie effect would come into play if they wish to add it at any point in the future. The window would get warp into a iconified window in the dock. T

hen when you click on the icon it simply restores the window or if you alt tabbed or something to it then it would remove the thumbnail.

There're these G4 cases at ebay right now. The prices are getting pretty steep: $170+ at the moment. That turned me off :D

uh.....ok dunno exactly what those last few posts had to do with this thread but now since I think about I do need a new case cuz I only have one bay for a cd drive and I have an extra cd drive laying around. Also my case is so small I couldn't find a location for my new hard drive so I had to put it in my floppy drive slot.....surprised I didn't damage the hard drive with all the pressure I used to force it in... Anyways I have a list of 14 feature comparisons. I don't think I will put this in my site but I will give the table a nice aqua look to it and if anyone wants to put it in there site it is fine by me. In a bit I will post a link just to the table and I know it is inaccurate, so please let me know what needs to be fixed.

If I am right the triangle indicators is supose to indicate if the program is active on the OS X Dock, is that how it works on the MobyDock?

Deciever did you read what I have been saying? The "thumbnail" feature in the OSX dock just doesn't snapshot minimized QT movies it does it for any window that is minimized.

That's why the OSX dock has the genie effect.. any time you minimize something it shrinks into a "thumbnail" onto the dock.
